background

Sex with Me was written in mid-2015 during a "writing camp" at Rihanna's Malibu home . PARTYNEXTDOOR, who had previously made a name for himself through his participation in several works by the rapper Drake , but was still unknown himself, was invited there alongside other well-known songwriters. At first he didn't understand why he was chosen along with much more successful songwriters who had already recorded great hits, but was determined to write for Rihanna. During this time both Sex with Me and her future number one hit Work were created ; for both titles he was inspired by his Caribbean roots.

The song was not released as a single, but an EP was released on February 3, 2017 , which only contains remixes of the track and was titled Sex with Me - The Remixes .

Music and lyrics

In Sex with Me is a Contemporary R & B song can in Slow Jam style, which in C sharp minor is written. What is striking about the composition is that the chord progression lacks a harmonic resolution. One with echo -provided Synthesizer that alternately plays two tones is in the process of deep 808 - bass drums , hi-hats and snares highlighted. As the title suggests, the song's content is all about sex . Rihanna is unusually explicit about her sexual intentions and needs, especially when it comes to alcoholic beverages and drugs . She makes it clear that her desires are purely physical and have nothing to do with romance. She describes the feeling that the listener feels when they sleep with her as incredibly good and wishes the coitus to last as long as possible.

criticism

Sex with Me received extremely positive reviews and was considered one of the highlights of the album, as well as one of the best bonus tracks of all time. It was praised that the Deluxe Edition would end worthily with an experimental song and that its fantastic, fictional character represented a contrast to the personal numbers performed before. It would be a testament to how talented PARTYNEXTDOOR would be as a songwriter ; Rihanna's voice would fit the instrumental perfectly and show what a slow jam should sound like these days. The chord progression was also praised, which makes the beat a crown jewel of the producers involved. It would be one of the "sexiest" songs of all time, not just because of its lyrics and vocal performance, but because sex would be integral to the structure of the song. The effectiveness of the musical composition was compared with Beethoven , who struck the keys hard on the fortepiano to symbolize sexual intercourse; Furthermore, parallels were drawn with the Tristan chord . The only criticism was that the decision was made not to let the piece become part of the standard edition of Anti .

Vice named Sex with Me second best song of 2016; The Fader included it in their playlist of the best tracks of the same year.

success

Sex with Me was a moderate commercial success in the United States . It climbed to number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was awarded a platinum record. In France it reached position 52; in German-speaking countries it did not show up in the charts.
