Unapologetic (. En for: "Not apologetic" ) is the seventh studio album of the Barbadian pop - singer Rihanna . The album was released worldwide on November 19th, 2012.
background
In March 2012, Rihanna said in an interview that she has not yet started recording her next album, but has already started “working on new sounds” for the album. On September 12, 2012 the French branch of Def Jam announced via Twitter that a new single from Rihanna would be released in the coming week, while her seventh studio album would be released in November 2012. However, the tweet was deleted shortly after it was published and replaced by a new one, which stated that "further information will be announced tomorrow (Thursday, September 13)". On October 11, 2012, Rihanna published the official CD cover for the album via Twitter and later announced the name and release date. Regarding the album title, Rihanna said she wanted to express how honest she is: “I called my album 'Unapologetic' because there is only one truth and there is no apology for it. It's honest. I have of course always evolved, I think the only motto I have is to be honest with myself. "
Recordings and production
Rihanna began recording the seventh album on June 20, 2012 with Nicky Romero and Burns. Rihanna and Burns booked a studio in London for three days, while Rihanna appeared on Radio 1's Hackney Weekend . It was confirmed that Rihanna would work with Eric Bellinger, Sean Garrett and Swedish House Mafia . On July 6, 2012, producer No ID confirmed that they had started work on the seventh album with Rihanna. On July 10, 2012, British singer and producer Labrinth told Capital FM that he was working with Rihanna: “I was hoping to be able to work with her soon so I called her manager, I think she is working on a few things right now , so everyone's here right now, and they work in certain studios, so it seems pretty exciting. She's not in my studio [yet] but hopefully I'll have some hot songs on her album. ”On July 17, 2012, it was reported that Rihanna would be working with R&B singer Ne-Yo and N-Dubz member Fazer. In an interview with Capital FM, Ne-Yo said of working with Rihanna on the new album, “I did a couple of songs for Rihanna recently, you know. She's the hardest working woman in show business right now. She is in the process of putting together a new album. I worked with StarGate and David Guetta and a few other people on this project. "
On July 13, 2012, Sean Garrett confirmed that he was in the studio with French DJ David Guetta, working on material for Rihanna. He said, “I was in the studio with David recently doing new material for Rihanna. He finds inspiration in the things I don't like and I get excited by the things he doesn't like. He wants to be more urban and I want to be more international so that we influence each other. I'm trying to help Rihanna. She works hard and it's cool to write openly for someone like that. ”On August 21, 2012, American songwriter Claude Kelly announced that he had written songs for Rihanna while she was performing in London. He said: “Rihanna is a world star and she performs in stadiums and arenas. Now, so I wanted songs that reflected their audience. When I was in London I saw them perform at a festival in front of around 30,000 to 40,000 people. So I didn't want to produce little songs that are only played on the radio, I tried to write big stadium anthems. ”On August 16, 2012, British singer Angel said that he wrote for Rihanna's album:“ I love it Writing songs and then passing them on to other artists. I wrote quite a few weeks ago for Rihanna. ”In September 2012, Ne-Yo confirmed his involvement in the album and said,“ I was in the studio with Rihanna. I know that a song or two with my participation will definitely be on the album. "
Singles
On September 27th, Rihanna released the first single Diamonds . The song was announced after her appearance at the iheartradio music festival in September 2012. She described the song as “happy and hippie” and said: “The song is neither sad nor danceable, you will just feel happy and hippie - a casual love -Song just. Every time I hear it I feel a lot better because the lyrics are really hopeful and so positive. ” Diamonds premiered on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on September 26, 2012 and was made available for download on iTunes an hour later . The song was from the from Australia coming Sia Furler in collaboration with Benjamin "Benny Blanco" Levin and Stargate produced (Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen). The cover for the song was revealed on September 24, 2012 and shows Rihanna's hands wrapping diamonds in a piece of paper. Chris Witherspoon from The Grio noted that the paper on the cover is the same paper that is used to roll marijuana . In the official single charts, the song made it to the top position in Germany , Austria , Switzerland , the United Kingdom , France and the United States, among others . It became Rihanna's twelfth number-one hit in the United States.
