Angel Street in Sverdlovsk

The city is located in the eastern Donets Basin , about 80 km south of the oblast capital Luhansk .

history

The city was created in 1938 through the merger of several villages and is named after the Soviet Russian politician, revolutionary and Bolshevik Yakov Sverdlov (1885-1919). POW camp number 470 for German prisoners of war was located in Sverdlovsk.

Since the summer of 2014, the town has been occupied by separatists from the Lugansk People's Republic during the war in Ukraine .

On May 28, 2009, a bill was presented in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, in which it was planned to rename the city of Sverdlovsk in Dolschansk (Должанск). On May 12, 2016, the official renaming to Dowschansk took place, but since the place is currently not under the control of the Ukrainian government, the renaming could not actually be carried out.
