history

The city was founded in 1764 under the name Holubiwka . From July 12, 1942 to September 3, 1943, the place was occupied by troops of the German Wehrmacht .

After the Second World War there was a camp for German prisoners of war in the city (Golubowka camp) with an anti- fascist school , which was initially under the direction of the later People's Police officer Paul Ludwig .

The city got its current name in 1962 after Sergei Kirov , a Soviet state and party official, together with the preservation of the status of a city of regional importance.

Since the summer of 2014, the town has been occupied by separatists from the Lugansk People's Republic during the war in Ukraine .

The successful football club FK Metalurh Donetsk emerged in 1996 from the football club FK Antrazit Kirovsk, which temporarily played in the highest Ukrainian football league, the Premjer-Liha .
