Kirovsk ( Ukrainian Кіровськ - Ukrainian officially since May 12, 2016 Голубівка Holubiwka ; Russian Кировск Kirovsk ) is a city of regional importance in the Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine with about 29,000 inhabitants (2013).
geography
The city is located on the Luhan River in the eastern Donets Basin, not far from Stakhanov and about 55 km west of the Oblast capital Luhansk .
In addition to the city itself, the municipality of Kirovsk also includes urban-type settlements
- Donezkyj , own settlement council,
- Tscherwonohwardijske , own settlement council (officially since 2016 Криничанське Krynytschanske /)
as well as the villages
- Krynytschne ( Криничне ), Tscherwonohwardijske settlement council
- Tavrychanske ( Тавричанське ), Tscherwonohwardijske settlement council
The Novotoshkivske urban-type settlement was spun off from the city on October 7, 2014 and attached to Popasna district .
history
The city was founded in 1764 under the name Holubiwka . From July 12, 1942 to September 3, 1943, the place was occupied by troops of the German Wehrmacht .
After the Second World War there was a camp for German prisoners of war in the city (Golubowka camp) with an anti- fascist school , which was initially under the direction of the later People's Police officer Paul Ludwig .
The city got its current name in 1962 after Sergei Kirov , a Soviet state and party official, together with the preservation of the status of a city of regional importance.
Since the summer of 2014, the town has been occupied by separatists from the Lugansk People's Republic during the war in Ukraine .
The successful football club FK Metalurh Donetsk emerged in 1996 from the football club FK Antrazit Kirovsk, which temporarily played in the highest Ukrainian football league, the Premjer-Liha .
