Solote ( Ukrainian Золоте ; Russian Золотое Solotoje ) is a city in the Ukrainian Luhansk Oblast and had 14,000 inhabitants before the beginning of the Ukraine crisis in 2014 .

Geographical location

The city ​​located in the Donets Basin belongs administratively to the Popasna Raion and is located on the regional road P-66 and the territorial road T-13-16 18 km northeast of the Popasna district center and 68 km northwest of the Luhansk oblast center . In the north, Solote borders the city of Hirske . Solote was founded in 1903 and has had city status since 1938. Since mid-2014, the city has been on the contested border with the eastern Ukraine, which is occupied by separatists from the People's Republic of Lugansk .

Until October 7, 2014, the place administratively belonged to the city of Pervomajsk and was then annexed to the Popasna Raion , in September 2016 the area around the village of Katerynivka (Катеринівка) was enlarged with 228.19 hectares.
