Krasnodon

Krasnodon (Ukrainian and Russian Краснодон - Ukrainian officially since May 12, 2016 Sorokyne / Сорокине ) is a mining town in the far east of Ukraine , in Luhansk Oblast with 43,000 (2016) inhabitants.

The place, which was founded in 1914 as a workers' settlement , was called Sorokyne until its elevation to the city of 1938 and was then renamed Krasnodon. The city is also the center of the Krasnodon Raion of the same name , but not part of it.

Since 2014, the city has been de facto under the control of the unrecognized People's Republic of Lugansk .

Geographical location

Krasnodon is located on the Velyka Kamjanka River ( Велика Кам'янка ), a tributary of the Siversky Donets . The M 04 trunk road runs through the city , leading to the northwest after about 50 km to the oblast capital Luhansk and to the east, from the Russian border as M21 , to the Russian city of Donetsk , about 20 km away .

The city is the scene "of the novel The Young Guard " (Молода гвардія) of the Soviet writer Alexander Fadeyev , the the struggle and the fate of the factual story of a young resistance group against the German occupation (1942-43) during World War II describes . A memorial complex with a memorial and a museum is dedicated to the cruelly executed youths in Krasnodon.

Since 1987 Krasnodon has been connected to Molodohwardijsk by a trolleybus route.
