Pervomajsk ( Ukrainian Первомайськ , Russian Первомайськ Pervomaisk ) is a city of regional importance in the Luhansk Oblast in Ukraine with 37,000 inhabitants (2013).

Geographical location

The city is located in the Donets Basin 76 km west of the Luhansk Oblast center and about 120 km northeast of Donetsk on the left bank of the Luhan River . The converter station of the HVDC Volgograd-Donbass is located northeast of the city .

Borough

The municipality of Pervomajsk consisted of the city of Pervomajsk, the cities of Hirske and Solote and the urban-type settlements of Nysnye and Toshkivka until October 7, 2014. These were then incorporated into the Popasna Raion . The municipality had a total of 70,138 inhabitants (2012).

history

Pervomajsk was founded as Oleksandrivka in 1765 and carried Petro-Marewka between 1865 and 1920 . In 1920 it was finally renamed Pervomajsk (from Russian Pervoje Maja for May Day ), in 1938 it received city rights.

During the war in Ukraine, the place fell to the separatists of the Lugansk People's Republic . Separatist Mayor Yevhen Istschenko and other men were murdered in January 2015. Separatists accused Ukrainian agents of the crime, while other sources believe internal power struggles were the cause of the murder.

According to the 2001 Ukraine census, the city's population is composed of the following ethnic groups:

  • Russians - 27.3%
  • Belarusians - 1.1%
