Rubishne ( Ukrainian Рубіжне ; Russian Рубежное Rubeschnoje ) is a city of regional importance in eastern Ukraine . With 60,416 inhabitants (November 2012) it is the eighth largest city in Luhansk Oblast .

Rubizhne is known for its chemical and pharmaceutical plants and factories. The headquarters of Microkhim , the largest Ukrainian manufacturer of substances and drugs for cardiology, is located in the city, as is Rubezhnoye Pipe Plant , one of the largest plastic pipe plant manufacturers in Ukraine.

history

Urban development began with a train station built in 1904. In 1915 the first chemical plant was built in the city and in April 1930 Rubishne was declared a city. Since 1940 it has had the status of an independent city. The city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops on July 10, 1942 and liberated by the Red Army on January 31, 1943 . In the summer of 2014, during the war in Ukraine , the city was occupied by separatist units from the Lugansk People's Republic , but these were driven out by anti-terrorist units of the Ukrainian army.

The city is located in the Donets Basin on the left bank of the Donets near the cities of Sjewjerodonetsk , Lysychansk and Kreminna about 85 km northwest of the Luhansk Oblast center .

The length of the city is 8.5 km in north-south direction and the width from west to east is 6 km. The surface of the urban area is relatively flat and lies in a range from 50 to 90 meters above sea level.

The city is located in a strongly continental climate zone with fairly dry summers and snowy winters with an unstable snowpack. The average temperature of the warmest month (July) is 21 to 22 ° C and that of the coldest month (January) is −7 to −8 ° C. The maximum temperature in summer reaches +39.5 ° C, the minimum temperature in some winters reaches down to -34 ° C. Spring frosts occur by mid-April and the first autumn frosts appear in the second half of September. The duration of the frost-free period is therefore 240 to 260 days a year. The average rainfall is up to 284 mm from April to October, with strong annual fluctuations.
