Dixon McRae Ward (born September 23, 1968 in Leduc , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who worked for the Vancouver Canucks , Los Angeles Kings , Toronto Maple Leafs , Buffalo Sabers , Boston Bruins and New York Rangers in played the National Hockey League . His brother Colin was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

The offensive player was initially active from 1986 to 1988 for the Red Deer Rustlers in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . At the NHL Entry Draft in 1988 he was selected in the seventh round at a total of 128th position by the Vancouver Canucks . The attacker then began studying at the University of North Dakota and spent the next four years on the ice for their ice hockey team, the Fighting Sioux , in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . During that time, the Canadian was elected to the league's Second All-Star Team twice . For the 1992/93 season , the right- shooter made his debut for the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League , where he completed 70 meetings in the regular season for the team and scored 52 points . With a value of +34 in the plus / minus balance, he also led all rookies across the league . In January 1994 the Vancouver Canucks transferred him to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Jimmy Carson . For the Californians, Dixon played 34 NHL games before he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a six-player barter before the beginning of the following season . However, as in Los Angeles before, he did not really find his way there and lagged far behind his performance in the rookie season. The signing of the contract in September 1995 with the Buffalo Sabers , with whom he hired as a free agent , brought decisive upswing in the Canadian's career .

After he had spent his first season in the organization of the Buffalo Sabers mainly with their farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League , with whom he honored the Calder as the most valuable player in the 1996 finals - with the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy Cup won and also made the leap into the ranking of the ten best point collectors in the league, Dixon also prevailed in the course of the 1996/97 season as a regular in the NHL squad of the Buffalo Sabers. The 1998/99 game year was his most successful in the dress of the buffalo , with which the winger reached the final series of the Stanley Cup . In six games, however, the team was defeated by the Dallas Stars , with the right-shooter being successful with one hit. For the 2000/01 season , the free agent was hired by the Boston Bruins and stood for them in 63 NHL games on the ice.

Following this season, he first accepted an offer from Europe and spent the game of 2001/02 in the Emmental in the SCL Tigers from the National League A . In early October 2002, the Canadian was signed by the New York Rangers , but spent most of the season with their AHL farm team Hartford Wolf Pack . Ward then returned to Switzerland for one season and played his last professional season in the SC Rapperswil-Jona jersey .
