The 1998/99 NHL season was the 82nd season in the National Hockey League . 27 teams played 82 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Dallas Stars after a 4-2 win in the final series against the Buffalo Sabers . After the Minnesota North Stars participated in two finals , the successor franchise from Dallas brought the Cup to Texas for the first time.

As in the previous year , the season opened again in Japan . In Tokyo , the San Jose Sharks met the Calgary Flames .

With the addition of the Nashville Predators , the NHL broke open structures that had grown over the years. With the Southeast Division and the Northwest Division , there were two new groups, so that from now on the game was played in six geographically ordered divisions. In the course of the reorganization, the Toronto Maple Leafs moved to the Eastern Conference .

Holding 61 NHL records, Wayne Gretzky , who had played for the New York Rangers for the past three years , retired at the end of the season. In his career, "The Great One" scored 894 goals and made 1963 assists for 2857 points.
