Career

Rob Ray began his career in 1985 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Cornwall Royals . Already there he showed that the physically tough game was his strength and he did not shrink from letting his fists fly. In his first year he received 253 penalty minutes in 53 games. But he also continued to develop in terms of play and was able to record eleven goals and 40 assists in the 1987/88 season.

In the 1988 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Buffalo Sabers selected in the fifth round at position 97 and closed for the 1988/89 season the Rochester Americans in, the AHL - farm team of the Sabers. The following year he came to his first missions in the NHL and was part of the regular team of the Buffalo Sabers from the 1990/91 season and that for more than ten years.

In 1990/91 he made his career best with eight goals and eight assists. But his main task during his time in Buffalo was to protect the stars of the team and often with his fists. He developed into one of the most famous enforcers of his time and often met other specialists in this field, such as Tie Domi or Jeff Odgers . Ray celebrated his greatest success when he moved into the final of the Stanley Cup with the Sabers in the 1998/99 season , but was defeated there by the Dallas Stars . Just a few days later, at the 1999 NHL Awards ceremony, he was honored with the King Clancy Memorial Trophy , which is given to the NHL player who excels through leadership and social engagement. If he was feared on the ice because of his hardness, he was involved in the Make-a-wish Foundation, a children's hospital and the Rosewell Park Cancer Institute.

In March 2003, his nearly 14-year tenure with the Buffalo Sabers ended when he was transferred to the Ottawa Senators . For the Senators, he completed only six games in the following season and came five times for the AHL farm team Binghamton Senators before he ended his career in February 2004. In the wake of his career, Rob Ray returned to Buffalo and was part of the Buffalo Sabers television team. There he commented on what had happened as an expert.

Others

  • "Rayzor" , as he was also known, fought around 250 fistfights during his 15-year NHL career and received 3207 penalty minutes. With 3,189 penalty minutes for the Buffalo Sabers, he holds the record as the player who has received the most penalty minutes for a team.
  • Rob Ray created his own way of fighting during his time with the Buffalo Sabers. If he and an opponent were ready for a fight and dropped the gloves, he also took off his helmet, jersey and protective gear so that he only fought with a bare chest. As a result, he did not offer his opponent any opportunity to hold on to him and thus had a clear advantage during the fight and could control the fight. The NHL then introduced a rule that forbade players to take off their jerseys and upper body protection in a fight. The rule was then nicknamed "Rob Ray Rule" .
