Career
Darren McCarty grew up in Leamington , Ontario , and began his career in 1989 in the junior Ontario Hockey League with the Belleville Bulls . In the 1991/92 season he scored 127 points in 65 games and drew the attention of the scouts of the National Hockey League . In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round at position 46. In 1992/93 he played in the American Hockey League for the Detroit farm team , the Adirondack Red Wings .
In 1993/94 he made his debut in the NHL and immediately established himself with the Red Wings. The 1996/97 season was particularly memorable. In a mass brawl with the Colorado Avalanche , the Hockeytown brawl , McCarty took revenge on Claude Lemieux , who had checked McCarty's teammate Kris Draper into the gang the previous year , resulting in facial fractures and a concussion. It was McCarty, of all people, who scored the winning goal in extra time in this game. The Red Wings moved into the playoffs up to the final of the Stanley Cup and it was Darren McCarty who ensured that the cup came back to Detroit after more than 40 years with his game-winning goal. He also achieved a personal record with 49 points scored in the regular season.
In 1998 the Red Wings were able to defend the Stanley Cup. In 2002 McCarty scored his first hat trick of his NHL career against the Colorado Avalanche in the playoffs . Detroit moved back to the Stanley Cup final and took the third title since 1997. McCarty played most of his time in Detroit in the infamous " Grind Line " with Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby .
After the 2004/05 NHL season was canceled due to the lockout , the Red Wings and Darren McCarty separated. McCarty was paid off and the contract terminated. In August 2005 he signed a contract with the Calgary Flames . After a solid first season, 2006/07 was followed by a weak season, which was marked by injuries and he remained without a scorer point in 32 games. His contract was not renewed by the Flames in the summer of 2007.
Since McCarty time, wanted to take to bring his life back regulated railways after he went bankrupt in 2006 and even his Stanley Cup rings auction had, he made his comeback in January 2008, but only in the unterklassigen IHL in Flint Generals . A month later he received a trial contract until the end of the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the AHL farm team of the Detroit Red Wings. There he showed convincing performances, even scored a hat trick in one of his first games, whereupon the Detroit Red Wings finally gave him an NHL contract until the end of the season a day before the end of the transfer window. McCarty stayed with the Griffins for a week and a half before he was brought into the NHL squad on March 7. His comeback in the NHL was due to a rib injury at the end of the month and remained at the beginning of the playoffs as a replacement for the injured Kirk Maltby in the regular Wings squad. After Maltby recovered from his injury, McCarty jumped in more times with injuries to Johan Franzén and Tomas Holmström and supported the Red Wings in a total of 17 playoff games on the way to the Stanley Cup victory.
At the beginning of the 2008/09 season he was still in the NHL squad, but was only used occasionally before he had to pause longer due to an injury in December. In February 2009 he returned to the AHL at the Grand Rapids Griffins back on the ice and was able to show good performance there on the offensive. On December 1, 2009 he ended his playing career.
McCarty distinguished himself primarily not as a goalscorer or preparer, but as a player who prefers a tough game and does not shy away from fights on the ice. While it is rather unpopular with the opposing players, it enjoys great popularity with the fans.
