Career

Holmström in the Detroit Red Wings jersey

Tomas Holmström first played in Sweden for his home club Piteå HC and Bodens IK in the second division Division 1 and was selected in the tenth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in 257th position by the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League . After the draft, the striker initially moved to Luleå HF in Sweden's Elitserien . There he played for two years before he dared to jump into the NHL after winning the Swedish championship in spring 1996.

The attacker began the 1996/97 season in the Red Wings farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings in the American Hockey League , but was summoned to the NHL team after just six games. In his very first season he won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings , in 1998 the Wings were able to defend the title with him. Over the years, Holmström has established himself as an integral and important part of the Red Wings. He did not step into the limelight with many goals and assists and was never one of the stars of the team, but helped the team with his defensively oriented and physical style of play. He won his third cup in Detroit in the 2001/02 season .

The Swede spent the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season back in his home at Luleå. He then returned to the NHL and increased to 59 points in the 2005/06 season after he had previously scored a maximum of 40 points in one season . In the 2006/07 season he played together with Henrik Zetterberg and Pawel Dazjuk in the Red Wings' first attack row. Although he scored significantly fewer points than the two stars of the team, he was still an important part of the team due to the way he played. When attacking, Holmström mainly positioned himself directly in front of the opposing goalkeeper to deflect shots into the goal, absorb rebound or simply to block the goalkeeper's view of the puck and was one of the best players in the league in this position. At the end of the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs , he won his fourth Stanley Cup with Detroit.

There were four more playing years in the service of the Red Wings before he announced his career end shortly before the start of the 2012/13 season, which was shortened by a new lockout, on January 22, 2013 after 15 seasons in Detroit.

International

Holmström represented his home country for the first time at the 1996 World Cup in Austria's capital Vienna . This was followed by appearances at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, USA, and at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey . To date , he has completed all tournaments with the Tre Kronor outside the medal ranks. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Italy , he celebrated his only international success by winning the gold medal and the associated Olympic victory.
