Slap Shot (in the original: Slap Shot ) is an American comedy film from the year 1977 with Paul Newman and Michael Ontkean in the lead roles. Directed by George Roy Hill , the screenplay is by Nancy Dowd and is based in large part on the experiences of her brother Ned Dowd , who played ice hockey in a sub-division in the USA in the 1970s . The film satirizes violence in ice hockey at the time, or how it got business going.

action

The film revolves around the fictional ice hockey team of the “Charlestown Chiefs”, which plays its home games in the lower class “Federal League” in the “War Memorial Arena”. The chronically unsuccessful team is facing financial ruin due to the bankruptcy of the largest local employer and is to be dissolved at the end of the season. This season, however, the Hanson brothers, three long-haired, bespectacled simpletons who are as infantile as they are violent, join the team. Reggie Dunlop ( Paul Newman ), the rather elderly player- coach, initially refuses to let her play. However, when the success fails, he finally lets them on the ice, where they immediately intimidate the opponents with their murderous checks and wild brawls and win the hearts of the fans.

Dunlop recognizes how promising this concept is and swears the whole team to it. Most of the players, including Dave "Killer" Carlson (played by Jerry Houser ), follow him, only the talented striker Ned Braden ( Michael Ontkean ) decides to keep playing clean ice hockey.

The team had great success with the new tactic and finally reached the final against the team from Syracuse . Before this game, however, the team learns that despite the unexpected success, the team will be irrevocably disbanded. With a touch of pathos she therefore vows to play exemplary fair in this last game. She is therefore mercilessly beaten in the first third of the game by the opposing team, which has assembled the worst hockey brutalos of all time in its ranks especially for this game. However, when the chiefs found out during the third break that players' agents were sitting in the stands and possibly waving new contracts, they suddenly changed their minds and delivered - to the relief of their fans - a gigantic mass brawl, in which only Ned Braden did not participate. He finally ends the unworthy spectacle by doing a striptease on the ice . The captain of Syracuse is so upset about this "perverse" performance that he ends up attacking the referee. The latter then aborts the game and the Chiefs are the champions.

background

occupation

The film was shot in Johnstown , Pennsylvania , with the participation of some players from the local Johnstown Jets , who played in the then North American Hockey League . Many scenes take place in the Cambria County War Memorial Arena , the former home of the Jets. One of the players the Jets was Ned Dowd (had the time his active career, however, already finished), which is in the movie the Syracuse-Goon "Ogie Ogilthorpe" and Slap Shot began his career as an actor and film producer.

The Hanson brothers were also portrayed by three former Jets players, namely brothers Steve and Jeff Carlson and Dave Hanson . There was another brother of the Carlsons named Jack ; this was originally intended for the role of the third Hanson brother, but he was requested before filming by the senior team of the Minnesota Fighting Saints . Dave Hanson, who was originally intended for the role of "Killer" Carlson, took over the part and the non-ice hockey actor Jerry Houser played "Killer" Carlson.

The Hanson brothers, who were 19, 20 and 21 years old at the time of filming, enjoyed a long career in professional ice hockey after the film - Jeff played a total of eleven years in an ice hockey league, Steve 14 years (including one year in the National Hockey League ) and Dave ten years (including half a year in the NHL). As in the movie, they were known in real life for their aggressiveness. Jeff Carlson came in the 1974/75 season in 64 games to a total of 264 penalty minutes, Jack Carlson collected 248 penalty minutes in the same season. Dave Hanson even set a team record in January 1976 when he had to sit on the bench for 38 minutes in a game.

Furthermore, players such as Bruce Boudreau , Ted McCaskill , Connie Madigan , Jean Tétreault and Jean-Louis Levasseur took on minor extras.

aftermath

The film had a lasting impact on ice hockey culture. The jerseys of the "Chiefs" from the movie are still worn by fans to this day and the actors of the Hansons (Steve Carlson, Jeff Carlson and Dave Hanson) enjoy continued popularity.

As a throwback to the film, the ECHL team of Johnstown Chiefs was named after the chiefs in the film and played in the War Memorial Arena , named after the venue of the same name in the film.
