Jean-Louis "Lou" Levasseur (born June 16, 1949 in Noranda , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played 85 games for the Minnesota Fighting Saints , Edmonton Oilers , New England Whalers and during his playing career between 1972 and 1981 Nordiques de Québec in the World Hockey Association as well as another for the Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League .

Career

Levasseur first appeared at the age of 22 in the Ontario Hockey Association , where he guarded the gate of the Orillia Terriers until the spring of 1974. His achievements there drew attention to the Minnesota Fighting Saints from the World Hockey Association , who hired him as a free agent in the summer of 1974 . First, however, they used him with the Johnstown Jets in the North American Hockey League , which he led to winning the Lockhart Cup in 1975 .

After Levasseur had already completed some missions for the Fighting Saints in the 1975/76 season , he was their regular goalkeeper in the following season . During this time he - like some other Fighting Saints players - also took on an extra role in the comedy Slap Shot with Paul Newman . In addition, the figure of the Franco-Canadian goalkeeper Denis Lemieux - played by Yvon Barrette - was based on Levasseur. In January 1977, the goalkeeper left Minnesota because the franchise had to stop playing. Together with his teammates Mike Antonovich , Bill Butters , Dave Keon , Jack Carlson , Steve Carlson and John McKenzie , he moved to league rivals Edmonton Oilers . There he ended the season to switch to the New England Whalers in September 1977 in exchange for Brett Callighen and Dave Dryden . The French-Canadian only spent one season there. In September 1978 he exchanged teams with Warren Miller and from then on guarded the gate of the Nordiques de Québec . However, these use him mainly in the American Hockey League with their farm teams .

Levasseur then returned to Minnesota in October 1979 , where he joined the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League as a free agent . There he came in the following two seasons to his only NHL use, in which he conceded seven goals. Primarily he was the goalkeeper for the Oklahoma City Stars farm team in the Central Hockey League . After the 1980/81 season , the Canadian ended his active career at the age of 32.
