The World Hockey Association All-Star Game was a friendly game in the American World Hockey Association , which was played in January from 1973 to 1979.

history

As in all major leagues, the WHA organized an all-star game every year . It was based on its big competitor, the National Hockey League, and in the first few years a team from the Eastern Division played against that from the Western Division . The first all-star game of the WHA was only a disappointing 5,000 spectators. In the later years it was more popular. Even in the third year of the WHA, after the league had been divided into three divisions, the east played against the west. The Canadian Division teamswere divided. A year later, the stars from the Canada-based teams played against those of the US teams. A year later they returned to the East versus West format.

In 1978 there was only one division. One thought of the early years of the NHL, when the All-Stars competed against the Stanley Cup winner. In the WHA, the All-Stars played against the winner of the Avco World Trophy, the Quebec Nordiques . The last edition was played in three games between the WHA All-Stars and HK Dynamo Moscow . Despite terrible snowstorms, the stars made it to Edmonton to take part in the games.
