The Richfield Coliseum (also known as Coliseum at Richfield ) was a multipurpose hall in Richfield Township in Summit County between Akron and Cleveland in northeast Ohio . The hall held 21,000 visitors at concerts and a little less at sporting events. The Richfield Coliseum was demolished from March to May 1999.

The hall was designed by George E. Ross Architects, Inc. The foundation stone was laid on March 16, 1973. The arena was opened on October 26, 1974. The construction costs amounted to 36 million US dollars . The Richfield Coliseum replaced the Cleveland Arena opened in 1937 and was mainly used for sporting events such as basketball , ice hockey , soccer and tennis, and concerts . The main sporting users all along were the Cleveland Cavaliers from the National Basketball Association .
On March 24, 1975, the boxers Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner faced each other in the new arena. Ali won by TKO in the 15th round. For Muhammad Ali it was the first title defense ( WBA / WBC ) after the Rumble in the Jungle against George Foreman on October 30, 1974. Another world championship boxing match took place on September 23, 1983 in Richfield. The from Akron and up to then undefeated WBA heavyweight world champion Michael Dokes surprisingly lost against the South African Gerrie Coetzee by knockout . The wrestling event WWF Survivor Series (1987, 1988, 1992) was held three times at Richfield Coliseum. Larry Bird played his last NBA game on May 17, 1992 at Richfield Coliseum. Bird lost with the Boston Celtics against the Cleveland Cavaliers 104: 122 and was eliminated from the play-offs.
The hall has hosted concerts by international artists and bands such as Bruce Springsteen , Whitney Houston , David Bowie , Queen , U2 , Grateful Dead , Phil Collins , Rush , KISS , Janet Jackson , Eric Clapton , Stevie Wonder , Michael Jackson , Prince , Madonna , The Police , Metallica , Guns n 'Roses , Billy Joel , Deep Purple , Neil Diamond , Elvis Presley , Bob Dylan , Genesis , Pink Floyd , The Who , Aerosmith , Van Halen , John Denver , Tina Turner , Led Zeppelin , Frank Zappa , Jethro Tull , Alice in Chains , Fleetwood Mac , Iron Maiden , ZZ Top , Whitesnake , Mötley Crüe , The Kinks , Robert Plant , Anthrax , Megadeth , Judas Priest or Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band . Frank Sinatra gave the first concert at the Coliseum on October 26, 1974. On September 1, 1994, Roger Daltrey was the last to appear in the hall. The last event was a Cleveland Lumberjacks ice hockey game on September 24th of that year. On October 17, 1994, the Quicken Loans Arena was opened as the new venue for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
