The Survivor Series is one of the major events of the wrestling market leader WWE and, along with SummerSlam , Royal Rumble , Money in the Bank and WrestleMania, is one of WWE's “Big Five” pay-per-view (PPV) events.

Together with Wrestlemania, Royal Rumble and SummerSlam, the Survivor Series is an event in which wrestlers from the two WWE squads, Raw and SmackDown (until 2009 also ECW and since 2019 NXT ) compete against each other.

history

The Survivor Series event in 2005.

The event originally took place every year on the day of the harvest festival and was intended as a kind of tradition for this festival. In later years, however, this date was deviated from and the festival was no longer mentioned.

The first edition of the event took place on November 25, 1987 at the Coliseum at Richfield in Richfield, Ohio. The concept was tag team elimination matches in which teams with at least four members each faced each other. The team that first causes all members of the opposing team to be eliminated by pin, abandonment, counting or disqualification is declared the winner. At the first events of this kind, only such elimination matches took place. That only changed in 1991 when the Undertaker played a title match against Hulk Hogan .

Later, the classic elimination matches of the Survivor Series lost more and more importance, in 1992 there was only one such match and the 1998 edition was all about a tournament to determine a new WWE World Champion . At the time of the separation between RAW and SmackDown! (until 2009 also ECW ) the concept of elimination matches is also used to allow both brands to compete against each other.

On February 11, 2010, WWE President Vince McMahon announced that the concept was deemed obsolete and would replace the major event. On June 8, 2010, however, he revised this statement and announced that the Survivor Series would continue.
