The World Heavyweight Championship was next to the WWE Championship one of the two world heavyweight titles of the wrestling organization WWE and was awarded to individual wrestlers. Introduced on Raw in 2002 , the title also moved to SmackDown, mostly due to the WWE Draft . Although the title is a championship independent of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship , its legacy can extend to the World Heavyweight Wrestling Championshipcan be traced back, giving the belt a legacy that goes back over 100 years. As is common in wrestling, the award was made according to a previously determined storyline .
history
After it had been decided to let the last WWE Undisputed Champion Brock Lesnar defend the title only at SmackDown during the division of the WWE into the two roster Raw and SmackDown , Raw remained without a world heavyweight title. The World Heavyweight Championship was then created again. The associated belt, which the World Heavyweight Champion wore as a symbol for the title, received the Big Gold Belt design which also previously represented the NWA World Heavyweight Championship (1988–1993) and WCW World Heavyweight Championship (1993–2001). According to the WWE Board of Directors , this belt, including the accompanying title story, was a championship independent of the NWA and WCW. Still, its legacy can be traced back to the World Heavyweight Wrestling Championship .
After the title was changed several times between the shows of the WWE and later the division of the WWE into two roster was canceled, it was last awarded on both SmackDown and Raw . At TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs Pay-per-View in 2013, the title was dropped after a union match between World Heavyweight Champion John Cena and WWE Champion Randy Orton .
