John Randall Hennigan (born October 3, 1979 in Los Angeles , California ), known by his ring name John Morrison , is an American wrestler who is under contract with the WWE . His biggest success so far was winning the ECW Championship .

Wrestling career

World Wrestling Entertainment (2003-2011)

Tough Enough and Ohio Valley Wrestling (2003-2005)

Hennigan successfully participated in the 2003 WWE Tough Enough talent search . The WWE initially sent him to the OVW development league . At the time he was trained by Al Snow . In the OVW Hennigan won the Southern Tag Team Championship on November 10, 2004 together with his tag team partner Joey Mercury . In 2004 he made his debut in the WWE. There he performed under the names Johnny Blaze, Johnny Spade and later Johnny Nitro. Since he could not convince the management with his performance, he was sent back to the OVW.

MNM and ECW Champion (2005-2007)

On April 14, Hennigan made his SmackDown debut and formed the stable MNM ( Mercury , Nitro, Melina ). On April 18, 2005 , the team won the WWE Tag Team Title from Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero .

On July 24, 2005 , the team lost the title to Heidenreich and Road Warrior Animal . On October 25, 2005, Hennigan and Mercury won the title back and lost it to Batista and Rey Mysterio on December 13 . Hennigan and Mercury regained the title on December 27, 2005.

On May 21, 2006 they lost the title to Paul London and Brian Kendrick . Then the team was disbanded and Hennigan switched to Raw.

In Raw, Hennigan first led some feuds before winning the WWE Intercontinental Title in a triple threat match against Carlito and Shelton Benjamin at the major Vengeance event on June 25, 2006 . On October 2, 2006, he lost the title to Jeff Hardy . On November 6, 2006 Hennigan won the title again from Hardy, but lost it again on November 13, 2006 to this. He then feuded in the tag team with Mercury against the Hardy Boyz (Jeff and Matt Hardy).

After this feud, Hennigan was switched to Extreme Championship Wrestling . On June 24th 2007 he won the ECW Champion title against CM Punk at the Vengeance event . From July 17, 2007 he changed his ring name to John Morrison . This gimmick is based on Jim Morrison from The Doors . On September 1, 2007 he was defeated by CM Punk and thus lost the title. The reason for this loss of title was a suspension for 30 days.

Tag Team with The Miz and Final Storylines (2008-2011)

On November 16, 2007 in SmackDown he won the WWE Tag Team title again with The Miz , this time from Matt Hardy and MVP . They lost this on July 20, 2008 at The Great American Bash to Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder .

On December 13, 2008, Hennigan and The Miz won the World Tag Team Champion title at a live event hosted by CM Punk and Kofi Kingston . They lost this at WrestleMania 25 to The Colons ( Carlito and Primo ) in a union match of the two tag team titles.

In April 2009 Hennigan was again switched to SmackDown. After several feuds, he won the Intercontinental Champion title from Rey Mysterio on September 1, 2009 . After winning the title, Hennigan feuded against Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre for the title. On December 13, 2009, Hennigan lost the Intercontinental Title to McIntyre.

In the 3-hour special edition of Monday Night RAW on April 26, 2010 Hennigan had to switch from SmackDown to RAW due to the WWE draft.

After the PPV TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs on December 19, 2010, Hennigan briefly feuded with WWE Champion The Miz. This was followed by a feud against his former tag team partner R-Truth. On November 28, 2011, he played his last match against The Miz and left the WWE on December 1, 2011.

Lucha Underground and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (2014-2018)

In September 2014, it was reported that Hennigan had signed a contract with the El Rey Network television network to appear on the new television series Lucha Underground under the ring name Johnny Mundo. Hennigan made his debut on October 29, 2014 in the main fight of the debut episode. He defeated Prince Puma and won one hundred thousand dollars.

On May 24, 2015, he made his debut for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide at the Lucha Libre World Cup event. There he represented the Lucha Underground team. His team lost in the final against the Dream Team .

Hennigan called the reigning AAA Latin American Champion Pentagon Jr. out. At Triplemanía XXIV he was able to prevail against Pentagón and won the AAA Latin American Championship . This made him the first non-Mexican to win the title. On March 19, 2017 Mundo defeated at Rey de Reyes El Texano Jr. and El Hijo del Fantasma in a three-way match to defend not only his championship success, but also Texanos AAA Mega Championship and Fantasmas AAA World Cruiserweight Championship to win.

On October 1st at Héroes Inmortales XI , Hennigan appeared in three championship matches. He successfully defended his mega championship against Rey Wagner. But he lost his Latin American Championship to Fantasma and his World Cruiserweight Championship to Launcelot. On January 26, 2018 at Guerra de Titanes , Hennigan also lost the Mega Championship after 314 days .

Impact Wrestling (2017-2019)

On August 24, 2017, Hennigan made his debut as Johnny Impact for Impact Wrestling . At Bound for Glory 2018 Hennigan defeated Austin Aries and won for the first time in his career the Impact World Championship . In the following weeks Impact successfully defended his title against Fénix, Killer Kross and Matt Sydal .

At United We Stand , Hennigan won a Five-Way Ultimate X Match , becoming the number one challenger for the Impact X Division Championship .

In Rebellion , Hennigan lost the title to Brian Cage in a match in which Lance Storm was the guest referee. His reign ended after 196 days. This is the third longest reign in the face of Impact Wrestling and the longest in seven years since Bobby Roodes reigned in 2012.

In the May 31st issue of Impact Wrestling , Hennigan challenged Impact X Division Champion Rich Swann to a title fight at Slammiversary XVII . He couldn't win this match. On July 8th, Pro Wrestling Insider reported that Hennigan's contract with Impact Wrestling had expired a few weeks before Slammiversary XVII , but both sides had agreed on another match.

Return to WWE (since 2019)

On December 4, 2019, WWE and Hennigan announced that they had signed a new multi-year contract. On January 3, 2020, Morrison made his comeback on SmackDown as part of a backstage segment . He made his in-ring comeback on January 17th, 2020 on SmackDown . There he played a match against Big E , which he won. On February 27, 2020 he won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship together with The Miz . For this they defeated The New Day Kofi Kingston and Big E.
