Wrestling career

World Wrestling Entertainment (2000-2010)

Ohio Valley Wrestling (2000-2002)

Through his success in wrestling, World Wrestling Entertainment noticed him and signed him. In 2000 Benjamin finally made his debut as a wrestler. In the then WWE Training League Ohio Valley Wrestling , Benjamin and Brock Lesnar formed the tag team Minnesota Stretching Crew . In February 2001 they won the OVW Tag Team title for the first time, which Benjamin was to hold three more times with various partners.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (2002-2004)

WWE Tag Team Champion Benjamin in 2003.

From 2002 Benjamin already completed a few appearances for the WWE until he was finally called to the main shows in October.

2003 he was left with Charlie Haas of Kurt Angle thought of as his proteges. Under Angle's leadership, they started as Team Angle. After just over a month, she was allowed to defeat reigning WWE Tag Team Champions Los Guerreros ( Eddie and Chavo Guerrero ) and win the title. At the Judgment Day event in May 2003, they had to give the titles back to Eddie and Tajiri , only to get them again just a few weeks later. They had previously been separated from Kurt Angle and now entered The Best Damn Tag Team Period or (later) The World's Greatest Tag Team. They surrendered the tag team title to the Guerreros again in September and subsequently remained involved in the title affair, but did not receive them again. Their last joint match for the time being took place at WrestleMania XX .

Intercontinental Champion (2004-2007)

After WrestleMania , Benjamin was sent to the Monday show RAW , which disbanded the team. In his first match he was surprisingly allowed to defeat the top star Triple H and thus become the face . Then Benjamin was involved in a feud program against him and his group Evolution. One day after his first title match for Randy Orton's WWE Intercontinental Championship , which he was unable to win, Benjamin broke his hand and had to pause for several months. Upon his return in September, Benjamin resumed the feud program against the remainder of Evolution .

At the Taboo Tuesday event in October, he received the Intercontinental Champion title against Chris Jericho . On June 20, 2005 he had to surrender the title to Carlito again.

In January 2006 he was told a storyline that his mother, played by the actress Thea Vidale (an archetype of the Afro-American "Big Momma"), supported him and occasionally intervened during his matches. Shortly thereafter, Benjamin was turned back into an unpopular wrestler and now appeared again as a heel .

The actress who played Benjamin's mother had heart problems and had to be written out of the storyline shortly afterwards. From this point on, Benjamin appeared as an arrogant villain and denied feud programs with flair, whose Intercontinental title he won, and Rob Van Dam . He lost this title to Rob Van Dam. Two weeks later Benjamin received the WWE Intercontinental Title again against Rob Van Dam, Triple H and John Cena .

As with his first reign, it was finally a RAW -Neuling that Benjamin was allowed to remove the title: In a Triple Threat Match was Johnny Nitro for the title. The resulting feud program of the three men involved was continued on the part of the WWE for a while.

Benjamin was now used less and less and often had to appear on the B-Show HEAT . In November he got the gimmick of an African-American who was frustrated because of alleged disadvantage and competed against the tag team Cryme Tyme (JTG and Shad). In 2007 Benjamin formed a tag team again with Charlie Haas.

The Gold Standard and Dismissal (2007-2010)

United States Champion Benjamin in 2008.

In November 2007 Shelton Benjamin competed against Tommy Dreamer at the reactivated ECW . There he announced as part of the storyline that he would now stay with this, which means that the tag team with Haas was dissolved again. At ECW, Benjamin embodied a selfish heel .

On June 25, 2008 Benjamin switched to the Friday show Smackdown! . At the Great American Bash , which took place in July 2008, Benjamin was allowed to win the WWE United States Championship by defeating Matt Hardy . He now denied a feud program with R-Truth . At the 500th edition of Smackdown, he had to surrender his US title to MVP.

On June 29, 2009, it was announced that Benjamin would be back on the WWE ECW roster. After various matches, together with Christian, against William Regal , Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson , he was used again as face .

After the ECW brand was discontinued, Benjamin switched to SmackDown. Benjamin qualified for the 2010 Money-in-the-Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania after defeating CM Punk. But on April 22, 2010, he was unexpectedly released by the WWE. On March 8, 2011 he went back to a dark match against Curt Hawkins.

Ring of Honor Wrestling (2010-2013)

On September 11th, 2010 Benjamin is back with Charlie Haas as the world's greatest tag team at the Ring of Honor, which on April 1st, 2011 secured the ROH World Tag Team Championship from the Kings of Wrestling. After losing the title to the Briscoe Brothers on December 23, 2011, they regained the title of those on May 12, 2012 at Border Wars . In Best In The World they lost the title to The All-Night Express (Kenny King & Rhett Titus).

New Japan Pro Wrestling (2012-2015)

Benjamin made his New Japan Pro-Wrestling debut on January 9, 2011 .

Return to WWE (since 2017)

On July 26, 2016, SmackDown announced its comeback, but it has been postponed indefinitely due to a serious shoulder injury.

On July 29, 2017 he made his comeback at Smackdown and won in a tag team match with Chad Gable against The Ascension Konnor & Viktor. The tag team was later separated and since then Benjamin has only played a few singles matches.

Benjamin moved from SmackDown to Raw on October 14, 2019 as part of the WWE Draft . On July 20, 2020, he won the WWE 24/7 Championship from R-Truth . The reign lasted 14 days and lost the title to Akira Tozawa on August 3, 2020 . On August 18, he won the R-Truth title, but lost it to Cedric Alexander that same night . However, he was able to win it again that same night. He lost the title to Akira Tozawa a week later on August 24, 2020.
