The WWE United States Championship is a secondary wrestling title of the US promotion WWE , which is awarded exclusively to male individual wrestlers of the raw rooster. The title was introduced on January 1, 1975 as the Mid-Atlantic version of the NWA United States Heavyweight Championships . Today it is the second oldest active title in the WWE and is equivalent to the Intercontinental Championship . The current title holder in his first reign is Apollo Crews . As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
history
For several years, several National Wrestling Alliance promotions have led to their own NWA United States Heavyweight title . The NWA United States Heavyweight Championship from Jim Crockett Promotions became the main title of the Mid-Atlantic region on 1 January 1975, Harley Race as the first titleholder. The title became the undisputed NWA United States Championship in January 1981 when the last NWA promotion, with its own United States title, was closed. In 1986 the title was demoted to the secondary title in Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling after the promotion acquired the rights to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship .
In 1991 the title was renamed the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship when Mid Atlantic became World Championship Wrestling .
In March 2001, the World Wrestling Federation bought the competitive league World Championship Wrestling. The WWF then started a storyline according to which WCW wrestlers invaded the WWF and formed an alliance with former ECW wrestlers. This storyline ended with a victory for the WWF over the WCW / ECW alliance. The WCW United States Championship was then combined with the WWF Intercontinental Championship .
After the end of the invasion storyline, the WWE distributed the large number of wrestlers after the purchase of WCW to two roster, each of which appeared on Raw or SmackDown . The United States Championship was reactivated as a midcard title at SmackDown on July 27, 2003 and has since been one of the two midcard titles with no weight limit in the WWE. In the following period, the title changed several times between SmackDown , Raw and ECW before the title was defended again in both shows from 2011 after the temporary end of the roster split. Since 2016, the title has been defended exclusively at a show.
