Lawrence Shreeve (born January 11, 1941 in Windsor , Canada ) is a Canadian wrestler who specializes in so-called hardcore wrestling . Under the ring name Abdullah the Butcher , he appears as a sadist from Sudan who tortures his opponents with forks and other sharp objects. He now also owns a restaurant in Atlanta and is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame .

Career

Shreeve was trained by Stu Hart and Gino Brito. First, he appeared under the ring name Pussycat Pikens and Zeras Amala . He later switched to the character Abdullah the Butcher , who became his most successful gimmick . The ring figure does not speak English and therefore needs different ring companions to do the speaking for him. The following people served Shreeve as ring companions: Oliver Humperdink, Paul Ellering, Paul Heyman and the Grand Wizard .

In the early stages of his wrestling career, Shreeve performed primarily in Canada . Among other things, at Stu Hart's promotion Stampede Wrestling , where he six times STAMPEDE North American Heavyweight Championship won . He later joined other member associations of the National Wrestling Alliance and played there in almost all North American states matches.

In 1975 Shreeve made his first appearance in Japan ; at All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) he won the Champion Carnival tournament in 1976, 1978 and 1979 .

Also in the following years Shreeve was a fixture in the show program of both All Japan and New Japan Pro Wrestling promotions .

In 1991 he was signed by World Championship Wrestling (WCW), but released a year later.

After his release, Shreeve returned mainly to Japan; also occasionally in America. At World Wrestling Council (WWC) he held the WWC Universal Championship , in 1993 he briefly appeared at the Promotion Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), which specializes in hardcore wrestling .

In 2003 Larry Shreeve was employed by Major League Wrestling , where he led his best-known feud against storyline rival Terry Funk .

In addition to the United States and Japan , Puerto Rico was also a permanent feature in Larry Shreeves' wrestling career. There the hardcore wrestler won the WWC Caribbean Heavyweight Championship twice, the WWC Puerto Rican Championship four times and the WWC Universal Championship five times .

After a world tour of various wrestling promotions from December 2008, Shreeve retired for the time being until he finally celebrated his return in March 2009 at various independent promotions. In October 2010 he played his last match.

On April 2, 2011, Shreeve was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Terry Funk .

  • Larry Shreeve is now listed as a pioneer of hardcore wrestling on the roster of an IWA association and, at over 70 years old, is one of the oldest still active wrestlers.
  • In 1982 he had a guest appearance as "Spartacus" in the Japanese action film Diamond of Death (Japanese title Hoero Tekken ).
  • Shreeve is one of the pioneers of today's hardcore wrestling due to his brutal wrestling style and became a role model for later wrestlers. For example for the Japanese hardcore wrestler Abdullah (the) Kobayashi , with whom he also formed a tag team for the Big Japan promotion.
