STAMPEDE Wrestling , or STAMPEDE for short , is the name of a former Canadian wrestling promotion that was based in Calgary , Alberta . Promoters were Bill Bell and Devon Nicholson .

history

The history of the promotion begins in 1930 when promoter Larry Tillman set up the Stampede Wrestling banner in Calgary .

In 1948 Stu Hart founded the sports club Foothills Athletic Club , which held wrestling tournaments under the banner of Klondike Wrestling in Edmonton, Alberta .

NWA time

In 1951 both promoters merged and put up the new banner STAMPEDE Wrestling . In the same year, STAMPEDE became an affiliate of the National Wrestling Alliance and appeared as NWA Calgary / NWA of Alberta .

In 1952 Larry Tillman retired from the NWA and Stu Hart took his place on the NWA board . Previously, as Tillman's deputy, he had only been an assessor.

STAMPEDE quickly became one of Canada's leading wrestling promotions, and between 1957 and 1989 it owned a successful TV format that was eventually broadcast to 50 countries.

STAMPEDE as WWF development territory

In 1982 Hart gave up his place on the NWA board and began a close collaboration with the then World Wrestling Federation , which STAMPEDE now took over as development territory. The WWF withdrew promising talents like Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart from STAMPEDE and built them up to become WWF stars.

In August 1984 Stu Hart retired from wrestling and STAMPEDE was officially taken over and closed. With the takeover by the WWF, the doctorate no longer belonged to the NWA, as the WWF had already left it in 1983. The purchase of STAMPEDE by the World Wrestling Federation was one of the first steps in this promotion to become the global wrestling market leader.

STAMPEDE as an independent promotion

In October 1985, however, Bruce Hart surprisingly bought STAMPEDE from the WWF again and established it in the Canadian independent scene . In December 1989 the doctorate was closed by Bruce Hart, but the wrestling school continued to exist.

On April 22, 1999, the brothers Bruce and Ross Hart tried to reactivate STAMPEDE as a Canadian promotion and to reintegrate them into the independent scene.

In addition, STAMPEDE produced its own shows again, which they mostly held in the Victoria Pavilion . They also tried to broadcast a TV format called Stampede Wrestling again . But this experiment was abandoned a short time later. After the sudden death of Owen Hart , the doctorate stopped its activity. In 2005 STAMPEDE was sold.

STAMPEDE under new management

In 2005, the new owners, Bill Bell and Devon Nicholson , tried to re-establish the STAMPEDE promotion in the wrestling business. For example, Abdullah the Butcher and Lance Storm were hired for an event in Cochrane .

At the beginning of 2007, the promotion had re-established itself to such an extent that it announced on its official homepage that STAMPEDE would resume regular operations with its first show on September 7, 2007. Nevertheless, in 2008 STAMPEDE finally ceased operations.

Hart Submission Dungeon

Stampede Wrestling also had its own wrestling school known as the Hart Submission Dungeon . This was located in a basement of the Harts estate. This school produced many stars of the World Championship Wrestling , Extreme Championship Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment leagues .
