National Wrestling Alliance of Canada (NWA Canada) is the name of a Canadian wrestling federation .

history

prehistory

The history of NWA Canada begins in November 1949 when promoter Eddie Quinn joined the National Wrestling Alliance with the Montreal Athletic Commission . Quinn broke away from the American Wrestling Association , which he had been a member of since 1938. Quinn formed the National Wrestling Alliance Montreal Office / NWA of Quebec in Montreal .

Establishment of NWA Canada

In September 1951 Larry Tillman and Stu Hart joined the NWA with their PhD STAMPEDE Wrestling and so the National Wrestling Alliance Calgary Office / NWA of Alberta was founded. Stu Hart took over from Tillmans on the NWA Board of Directors in July 1952 .

At the annual NWA meeting of September 1953, promoter Frank Tunney was accepted with the Queensbury Athletic Club . Tunney now organized under the banner of Maple Leaf Wrestling / NWA of Ontario and took over the National Wrestling Alliance Toronto office .

From 1957 to 1967, Stu Hart was apparently Canada's only representative in the NWA. It was not until 1976/77 that another Canadian was again represented in the NWA with Frank Tunney Promotions under Frank Tunney.

Founding of NWA Canada and its loss of importance

In 1979 the Canadian affiliates were combined by the National Wrestling Alliance under the common banner of NWA Canada and it was granted an NWA Heavyweight Wrestling Championship . This was introduced by the NWA Canada on December 17, 1978, whose first carrier was Dino Bravo .

At the NWA annual meeting of August 1979, Gene Kiniski was accepted into the NWA with his Northwest Wrestling Promotions .

By 1984, most Canadian promotions had resigned from the National Wrestling Alliance and the only Canadians were Stu Hart and Frank Tunney. However, these were already in negotiations with the then World Wrestling Federation .

In 1985, Gene Kiniski was resumed with his company KE Wrestling Promotions and was now staging under the NWA All-Star banner .

In 1986 all Canadian promoters left the NWA. Stu Hart and Frank Tunney joined what was then WWF between 1983 and 1984. The others now competed independently or organized under the banner of the American Wrestling Association .

Rise of NWA Canada as a national umbrella organization

1998/99 was an important period for the National Wrestling Alliance: With the establishment of the Canadian Championship Wrestling and the Canadian Wrestling Federation , Canadians were again represented on the Board of Directors with Dave Republic and Ernie Todd .

The events of the Canadian NWA associations are now carried out on behalf of NWA Canada and it is therefore considered the umbrella organization of the Canadian wrestling associations with the exception of the independent promotions . The affiliates of NWA Canada also appear on various occasions under the banner of NWA Pacific Northwest .

NWA Canada has been an affiliate of NWA British Commonwealth since 2007 .
