Ernie Roth (born June 7, 1929 in Canton , Ohio - † October 12, 1983 ), better known as The Grand Wizard, was an American wrestling manager.

Career

Beginning

Roth was a huge wrestling fan, but his stature prevented him from actively wrestling. However, in order to be active in the wrestling business, he became a commentator for Stu Hart's Stampede Promotion in 1960. Soon after, he became manager of Magnificent Maurice and "Handsome" Johnny Barend in Columbus. As Mr. Clean, he was bald with earrings. Roth also competed in 6 Man Tag Team matches.

Big Time Wrestling (1965-1970)

In 1965 he went to Detroit to Big Time Wrestling and took the name Abdullah Farouk . The reason for the name change was the management contract for the Sheik Ed Farhat . He was a promoter from Detroit and didn't speak a word of English, so he needed a manager. Sheik and Farouk had a special feud against Bobo Brazil during this period .

Worldwide Wrestling Federation

In 1970, Roth went to the WWWF with the Sheik. The debut was against Bruno Sammartino. Vince McMahon Sr. liked Roth and offered him a full time contract. Ernie Roth then went to WWWF and became the Grand Wizard , a comic book-style heel manager. In the WWWF the Grand Wizard never went into physical action, he created his status through his interviews. On December 1, 1973, the Grand Wizard was able to win the WWWF Heavyweight Championship with Stan Stasiak for a short time. The Grand Wizard was also the manager of Jimmy Valiant , Luke Graham , Mark Lewin , King Curtis and Don Muraco . On April 30, 1977 he was able to regain the title with "Superstar" Billy Graham . Together they drew very well at Madison Square Garden. They also made it to the first long-term title reign of a heel. A year later they lost the title to Bob Backlund .

Intercontinental Title Division

For the next 5 years, Pat Patterson , Greg Valentine , Ken Patera and Don Muraco were Grand Wizard Managers in the Intercontinental Title Division. He also managed wrestlers such as Blackjack Mulligan , Jerry Blackwell, Ernie Ladd, Ox Baker, Bobby Duncum Sr., Sgt. Slaughter, and Stan Hansen .
