Edward George Farhat (born July 7, 1924 in Lansing , Michigan , † January 18, 2003 in Williamston , Michigan), better known as The (Original) Sheik , was an American wrestler of Lebanese descent.
Farhat was one of the first wrestlers in modern wrestling who specifically used various weapons and objects in wrestling matches. Therefore, he is considered one of the early pioneers of the later hardcore wrestling - genres .
This spectacular and bloody-depicted style made it one of the biggest crowd pullers of the 1950s and 1960s. The wrestler Sabu is his nephew and was trained by him.
Career
Edward Farhat began his wrestling career in the 1950s. He was one of the first big bad guys when the wrestling shows started broadcasting on television.
Farhat's trademark was initially a jagged piece of wood that was supposed to be his “favorite weapon”. It was later replaced by a sharpened carpenter's nail.
Farhat's ring character was involved in brutal and bloody feud programs and also competed against the big names in the wrestling business. Antonino Rocca, Bobo Brazil , Buddy Rogers , Harley Race and Johnny Valentine were some of these. Farhat's ring character was primarily designed not to win titles, but to hurt his opponents.
Farhat was best known for his feud program with Abdullah the Butcher , which spanned several doctorates and decades. Both were also the first big names in US wrestling to feature in the Japanese promotion of Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling in the early 1990s.
Farhat died on January 18, 2003 as a result of a heart attack. On March 31, 2007, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his nephew Terry , his wife, and his former student Rob Van Dam .
