George Stipich (born April 13, 1937 in Arvida , Canada , † June 19, 1997 ), better known by his ring name Stan Stasiak , was a Canadian wrestler .

Life

George Stipich grew up in Quebec, Canada and played ice hockey in the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada . His aggressive style of play led his trainer to encourage him to give wrestling a try. In 1958 he began his career at Stampede Wrestling under the name Stan Stasiak and was initially nicknamed "The Crusher", later "The Man". In 1968 he was allowed to win the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Championship (Calgary version) . He took the name “Stan Stasiak” from a wrestler in the 1920s who died of blood poisoning that he contracted during a match.

On December 1, 1971, he competed in the WWWF against Pedro Morales and won the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship . He was active as an interim champion for nine days and lost the title on December 10, 1971 to Bruno Sammartino . The background was that the WWWF did not want another title match between the audience favorites Morales and Sammartino.

After winning the title, he was allowed to compete again in 1977 for the championship title against "Superstar" Billy Graham . He ended his wrestling career in 1984 and then worked as a security guard for the Toronto Simpsons and the Hudson's Bay Store in Toronto . In 1997 he moved back to Quebec and died of heart failure on June 19, 1997 at the age of 60 .

He is the father of WCW and WWF wrestler Shawn Stasiak .
