Robert Remus (born August 27, 1948 in Buford , South Carolina , USA ), better known as Sgt. Slaughter , is an American wrestler . He is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame . Furthermore, the figure of the drill instructor Sergeant Slaughter was used for the cartoon and toy series GI Joe and Remus' appearance was modeled.
Career
Beginnings
Before embarking on a wrestling career, Remus was a drill instructor in the U.S. military, which would be picked up in his later career. Remus was trained by Verne Gagne and had his first real name success in the NWA , where he held several regional titles. In 1975 he moved to the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and was renamed Bob Slaughter . After a brief engagement with Georgia Championship Wrestling in September and October 1977, he reappeared as Super Destroyer Mark II with manager Lord Alfred Hayes in the AWA, where he stayed until October 1980.
WWF debut as Sgt. Slaughter
Eventually Remus made his debut as Sgt. Slaughter in the World Wrestling Federation and got The Grand Wizard as manager. He initially acted there as a villain and feuded with the established wrestler Pat Patterson . In late 1981 Remus moved to Mid Atlantic Wrestling and won the NWA World Tag Team title with Don Kernodle and the NWA United States title . After he had made some appearances for Jim Crockett Promotions , a forerunner of World Championship Wrestling , in 1983 , he appeared again in April of that year at the WWF and was a contender for the heavyweight title , which was held by Bob Backlund at the time. In 1984 a change of heart took place with Remus and from then on he was allowed to appear as an American patriot and to feud against The Iron Sheik and other wrestlers acting as opponents of the USA. However, when Hulk Hogan was hired and became a superstar of the promotion, Remus went back to the AWA in 1985.
American Wrestling Association (1985-1990)
In the AWA, he won the America's Heavyweight Title by defeating Larry Zbyszko . He defended it against Kamala , Boris Zhukov , and Nick Bockwinkel before the title was retired. He also feuded there with the stable of Adnan Al-Kaissey , the Road Warriors , Col. DeBeers , Stan Hansen and Zbyszko for the AWA title.
World Wrestling Federation (since 1990)
When Slaughter returned to WWF in 1990, he got, contrary to his previous patriot gimmick, that of an Iraq sympathizer with General Adnan as manager. They wanted to take advantage of the current Gulf War situation and make Remus an absolute hate figure. This worked so well that Remus had to wear a bulletproof vest at times when he wasn't in the ring.
At the Royal Rumble 1991 he finally defeated the Ultimate Warrior after intervention by Randy Savage and received the WWF Heavyweight title . He then began a feud program with Hulk Hogan and had to give up the title at Wrestlemania VII again to this. The feud ended in a 3 on 2 handicap match at Summerslam 1991, in which Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior faced Remus, General Adnan and the Iron Sheik (as Colonel Mustafa) and defeated them.
After this feud, Remus returned as a purified patriot and teamed up with Hacksaw Jim Duggan , including against the Nasty Boys , and was at Wrestlemania VIII in an 8-man tag team match with Duggan, Virgil and The Big Boss Man against the Nasty Boys, Repo Man and The Mountie victorious.
After a long hiatus, Remus returned to WWF in 1997 in the role of an on-air commissioner. He was involved in a feud with the D-Generation X and in the course of this he played a boot camp match against Triple H without disqualification . In 1998 he appeared as one of the henchmen of Vince McMahon , who had meanwhile made himself a villain. In late 1998 Shawn Michaels became Commissioner and Remus stepped down again.
Remus showed up only sporadically in the following years, mostly to help young wrestlers to become better known, or at the Battle Royal of WrestleMania XVII .
In 2004, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Pat Patterson . On January 13, 2009 he was fired from the WWE in the course of austerity measures, but was hired again as a consultant in 2010.
In a special edition of RAW (RAW Old School) on November 15, 2010, which also featured numerous other Hall Of Famers, he played against Alberto Del Rio in a match . At RAW on July 4, 2011, Remus had another match against Jack Swagger that he lost.
Besides wrestling
The character of Sgt. Slaughter , who played Remus, was also used for the cartoon and toy series GI Joe . Remus dubbed the TV version and also starred in GI Joe: The Movie . Remus also appeared in the role of Slaughters as a guest star on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show , in which his wrestling colleague Lou Albano played Mario.
In the mid-1980s, Remus released an LP entitled "Sgt. Slaughter and Camouflage Rocks America ”. Remus also played a small guest role in the film "Bad Guys - Brutaler Than Police Allowed" with Adam Baldwin (1986), in which he played his most famous role Sgt. Slaughter .
