Curtis Michael "Curt" Hennig (born March 28, 1958 in Robbinsdale , Minnesota , † February 10, 2003 ), also known by his ring name Mr. Perfect , was an American wrestler . During his active time, he performed for the largest wrestling organizations worldwide and was regularly seen in their TV formats. Hennig was considered one of the best players in the wrestling business, but was never allowed to hold the highest title of a market-leading organization. In 2003, Hennig died of a cocaine overdose .

Private

Curt Hennig was the son of wrestler Larry "The Ax" Hennig and his wife Irene. During his schooldays at Robbinsdale High School he was close friends with Richard Rood, who later also became a well-known wrestler under the name Rick Rude .

His son Joseph Curtis Hennig was also wrestler and was also the market leader World Wrestling Entertainment under the ring name Curtis Axel under contract. However, he was released on May 1, 2020 .

Career

American Wrestling Association (1980-1982, 1984-1988)

At the University of Minnesota , Hennig played American football until a knee injury forced him to quit. After being trained as a wrestler by Verne Gagne and his father, he made his debut in 1979 in the American Wrestling Association . In the following years he was together with his still active father Larry as a tag team under the name Ax Attack . After he was briefly active from 1982 for the World Wrestling Federation , he returned to the AWA in 1984.

Hennig formed a tag team with Scott Hall and they received the AWA World Tag Team Championship in January 1986 . In May 1987 he was allowed to defeat reigning champion Nick Bockwinkel in a match and receive the AWA World Heavyweight Championship . After that, Hennig and his father had a long feud program against Greg Gagne and his father Verne. After more than a year, in May 1988, he finally had to surrender his title to Jerry Lawler . A short time later he left the AWA and switched to the WWF a second time.

World Wrestling Federation (1982-1984, 1988-1996)

Hennig joined the WWF under the name “Mr. Perfect “and got The Genius as a manager. In 1989 he worked with champion Hulk Hogan and competed with this in a feud program for his WWF Championship . With Bobby Heenan as the new manager, Hennig won the final of a tournament for the vacant WWF Intercontinental Champion title against Tito Santana in April 1990 and received it. In August, at the major Summerslam event , he had to surrender the title to Texas Tornado again, but was allowed to regain it in November and finally lost it the following year, at the 1991 Summerslam to Bret Hart . Despite losing the title, he delivered - according to fans and critics - the best performance of his career in the match against Hart.

After sustaining a back injury in a match against Bret Hart in the summer of 1991, he stopped actively in the ring for a year. Henning only appeared as a "technical advisor" alongside Ric Flair and as a commentator on "WWF Superstars of Wrestling". In the fall of 1992, he returned to the ring and feuded with Flair, Shawn Michaels and Lex Luger before the back injury forced him to take another break.

At Wrestlemania 10, Hennig was a guest referee in a title match between Lex Luger and Yokozuna . Hennig disqualified Luger and then a feud was planned between the two. However, the idea was discarded after Hennig's back problems surfaced again. Between 1995 and 1996 he worked several times as a commentator at WWF events.

World Championship Wrestling (1997-2000)

In 1997 Hennig switched to World Championship Wrestling and initially feuded against Diamond Dallas Page . He later became a member of The Four Horsemen and finally the nWo . In September he won the United States Championship , but had to hand it over to Diamond Dallas Page in December. In 1999 Hennig formed the West Texas Rednecks group together with Barry Windham , Bobby Duncum Jr., and Kendall Windham . During this time he and Barry Windham received the World Tag Team title . In November, the group separated again and Hennig only denied more insignificant programs, e.g. a. with Shawn Stasiak before his contract expired in the summer of 2000.

Independent (2001-2002)

From 2001 to 2002 he was active in the short-lived "X Wrestling Federation".

In January 2002 he returned briefly to WWE, but a backstage confrontation with Brock Lesnar caused his dismissal in May of the same year. Then Hennig came under the new competitor TNA Wrestling and denied a feud with the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett until his death suddenly ended his career.

Death and after

Hennig was found dead in a Florida hotel room on February 10, 2003. According to US authorities, Hennig allegedly died of a cocaine overdose .

Hennig was inducted into the Hall of Fame by Wade Boggs on March 31, 2007, the day before Wrestlemania 23 .
