Joseph Curtis "Joe" Hennig (born October 1, 1979 in Champlin , Minnesota ) is an American wrestler . He was recently under contract with the WWE and performed under the ring name Curtis Axel . His greatest achievement to date is receiving the Intercontinental Championship . He was also under contract with the Florida Championship Wrestling Development League , where he won the FCW World Heavyweight Championship .

Private life

Joe Hennig is a third generation wrestler; his grandfather Larry "The Ax" Hennig and father "Mr. Perfect “Curt Hennig were both wrestlers. His sister Amy is also a wrestler.

Hennig has a son.

Wrestling career

World League Wrestling (2007-2008)

Hennig made his debut on July 13, 2007 in Waterloo , Iowa for the World League Wrestling (WLW), along with Ted DiBiase, Jr. , against Dinn T. Moore and Branden Tatum with a loss. After that, Hennig had a nine-month winning streak in the WLW.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2008-2020)

Florida Championship Wrestling (2007-2010)

On March 31, 2007, Hennig joined his mother, siblings and grandfather in the name of his late father “Mr. Perfect “ Curt Hennig at the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony. On October 26, 2007 Hennig had his WWE debut at SmackDown, but had to lose this together with Steve Fender against Jesse and Festus.

Hennig signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment and was assigned to the Florida Championship Wrestling Development League (FCW). On September 11th, 2008 Joe Hennig and Sebastian Slater won the FCW Florida Tag Team title against Nic Nemeth and Gavin Spears . On October 30th, Hennig and Slater lost the Tag Team titles to David Hart Smith and TJ Wilson .

On November 20, Hennig challenged Sheamus O'Shaunessy for the FCW Florida Heavyweight Championship , but this match ended in a double disqualification. In the rematch for the title, Hennig was disqualified again. On February 26th, he won the FCW Florida Heavyweight Title from Escobar. On April 5, 2009 it was announced that Hennig had suffered a serious injury and therefore had to give up the Florida Heavyweight title.

After his recovery, Hennig returned to FCW at the end of June. Soon after, he formed a tag team with Brett DiBiase called The Fortunate Sons . On January 14, 2010 they were allowed to win the Florida Tag Team Championship against the Dudebusters.

The Nexus and Intercontinental Champion (2010-2013)

On June 1, 2010 it was announced that Hennig would appear as part of the second season of WWE NXT under the name Michael McGillicutty . Kofi Kingston was put at his side as his pro. At NXT, Hennig took second place after Kaval .

From October 2010 Hennig appeared regularly on RAW . There he was a member of the Stables Nexus , where he was also WWE Tag Team Champion with David Otunga on May 23, 2011 . As of August 1, 2011, he and Otunga no longer appeared as a Nexus. On August 22, 2011, they lost the title to Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston.

After the tag team was dissolved, Hennig was mainly seen at WWE Superstars and NXT. On May 20, 2013 he returned to RAW under the name Curtis Axel , where he was introduced by Paul Heyman as his new client. On June 16, 2013, he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship at PPV Payback in Chicago , where he defeated Wade Barrett and The Miz in a triple threat match. On November 18, 2013, he lost the title to Big E. Langston on Raw.

AxelMania and Social Outcasts (2015-2017)

After Paul Heyman split from Curtis Axel and Ryback , he and Ryback remained a team. You appeared as RybAxel . RybAxel vied for the WWE Tag Team Championship . However, they couldn't win the title. After Ryback returned from injury, the RybAxel team was disbanded on November 6, 2014. At the Royal Rumble he was attacked by Erick Rowan , who stole his place at the Royal Rumble. After the Royal Rumble he got the AxelMania Gimmick. He played a comedy character who boasted on the Raw and Smackdown editions that he was never eliminated from the Royal Rumble. He teamed up with Damien Sandow on the May 11, 2015 edition of Raw . Curtis Axel aka AxelMania imitated Hulk Hogan , while Damien Sandow imitated Randy Savage as macho Mandow . They named their team The Mega Powers , the same name Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage once used for their team. After Hulk Hogan was fired from the WWE for the racism scandal, her gimmicks were dropped too. Curtis Axel no longer appeared as AxelMania, while Damien Sandow no longer appeared as Macho Mandow. After a few weeks, her team was quietly disbanded. He then performed as a single wrestler.

From January 4, 2016 to July 11, 2016 Curtis Axel formed the stable The Social Outcasts together with Heath Slater , Adam Rose and Bo Dallas . The stable broke up with the sacking of Adam Rose and the draft when Heath Slater was not drafted to Raw .

Miztourage and The B-Team (2017-2020)

On June 19, 2017, he formed the tag team The Miztourage with Bo Dallas , led by The Miz , who founded this stable . After separating from Miz, the B-Team was created consisting of Axel and Bo Dallas after which they got a great momentum from the WWE Universe, which finally led to Axel and Dallas on July 15, 2018 the Raw Tag Team Championship from The Deleters of Worlds Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt won. This reign lasted only 50 days and then lost the title on September 3, 2018 against Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre . After losing the tag team title, they were only used for insignificant matches, some of which they could win.

As part of the Superstar Shake-Up 2019, Axel and his tag team partner Dallas switched from Raw to SmackDown on April 26, 2019 . Axel was released from WWE on April 30, 2020.

Dismissal from WWE (2020)

Curtis Axel was fired from WWE on April 30, 2020.
