Kofi Nahaje Sarkodie-Mensah (born August 14, 1981 in Kumasi , Ashanti Region , Ghana ), better known by his ring name Kofi Kingston , is a Ghanaian wrestler and currently appears regularly in the wrestling shows produced by the WWE . His greatest achievement so far is receiving the WWE Championship .
Life
After attending Winchester High School, for which he played American football and played amateur wrestling matches, Sarkodie-Mensah attended Boston College , where he received a degree in communication studies.
Wrestling career
Beginnings
Sarkodie-Mensah made his wrestling debut in 2005, performing primarily in New England , performing for the Millennium Wrestling Federation, New England Championship Wrestling, the Eastern Wrestling Alliance and Chaotic Wrestling under the name of Kofi Nahaje Kingston .
World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2006)
Development Leagues (2006-2007)
In September 2006 Sarkodie-Mensah signed a development contract for young wrestlers with World Wrestling Entertainment and was trained in their farm league Deep South Wrestling (DSW). By early 2007, he appeared for Deep South Wrestling and another WWE farm league, Ohio Valley Wrestling.
In 2007 he made his first appearances in programs of the WWE himself. After returning to the Farm League, he received the ring name Kofi Kingston . From May 2007 he appeared on tours of the WWE.
With the takeover of Florida Championship Wrestling as the new WWE farm league in June 2007, Sarkodie-Mensah was sent there and performed for them for the rest of the year,
Victory streak and feud against Randy Orton (2007-2010)
He made his main roster debut on one of WWE's main shows. Sarkodie-Mensah was first introduced as a Jamaican . Since his family felt hurt by this, he successfully asked management to announce him as a Ghanaian. After his debut on January 21, 2008, Sarkodie-Mensah had a long winning streak before losing to Shelton Benjamin for the first time in May 2008 . He then led a feud against Benjamin.
In June 2008, Sarkodie-Mensah switched to RAW . In the big event Night of Champions won Sarkodie-Mensah, the WWE Intercontinental Championship from Chris Jericho . He lost the title at SummerSlam 2008 to Santino Marella . Sarkodie-Mensah was then involved in a feud program with CM Punk against World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. included, in the course of which they won the title on October 27, 2008. On December 13th, they lost the title to John Morrison and The Miz . On June 1, 2009, Sarkodie-Mensah won the WWE United States Championship from MVP . He then denied several short feuds for the title before losing it to The Miz on October 5, 2009.
Title Regencies (2010-2013)
At RAW on April 26, 2010, Sarkodie-Mensah was switched to SmackDown . There he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship again on May 14, 2010, when he defeated Christian in the final of a tournament for the title. However, he had to give the title to the previous title holder Drew McIntyre due to a storyline , which is why the win did not count. Sarkodie-Mensah officially won it on May 23, 2010 on Over the Limit . On August 6, 2010, he lost the title to Dolph Ziggler , but was able to win it back from the same on January 4, 2011. At the SmackDown tapings on March 22, 2011, he lost the title to Wade Barrett .
On April 26, 2011, he was the WWE Draft 2011 into RAW - Roster changed. On May 1, 2011 he won the WWE United States Championship from Sheamus at Extreme Rules , which he lost to Dolph Ziggler on June 19, 2011 at Capitol Punishment . Together with Evan Bourne as Air Boom , he defeated David Otunga & Michael McGillicutty in RAW on August 22, 2011 and became the new WWE Tag Team Champion . They lost the title on January 15, 2012 at a house show to Primo and Epico. On April 30, 2012, he won the title back from those at RAW, this time with R-Truth as a partner. They lost the title at Night of Champions on September 16, 2012 to Daniel Bryan and Kane . At the tapings for the Main Event on October 16, 2012, he won the Intercontinental Championship from The Miz for the fourth time . On December 29, 2012, the records for the New Year's Eve edition of RAW, Sarkodie-Mensah lost the title again to Wade Barrett.
On April 15, 2013, he won the WWE United States Championship for the third time at RAW by Antonio Cesaro , but lost it a month later at the May PPV Extreme Rules to Dean Ambrose of The Shield.
The New Day and WWE Champion (since 2014)
In late 2014, he teamed up with Big E and Xavier Woods to form The New Day . They won the WWE Tag Team Championship on April 26, 2015 at Extreme Rules from Cesaro and Tyson Kidd . On June 14, 2015 at Money in The Bank , they lost their title to prime time players Darren Young and Titus O'Neil . At SummerSlam on August 23, 2015, The New Day took the title from Prime Time Players again.
On July 22, 2016, The New Day broke Paul London and Brian Kendrick's records to become the team with the longest title reign in the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship . The WWE Tag Team Championship was renamed the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship as part of the introduction of the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship while they were still champions . On December 18, 2016, at the PPV Roadblock: End of the Line , they lost their titles after 483 days of title reign at The Bar.
On July 23, 2017, The New Day won the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship from The Usos . However, the trio lost this back to the brothers 28 days later. A month later, on September 12, 2017, Kofi and Xavier Woods won the title again from The Usos. After only 26 days the brothers were the champions again.
On August 21, 2018, Big E and Kofi won the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship again , this time against the Bludgeon Brothers. On October 26, 2018, they lost the title to The Bar.
Despite his collaboration with The New Day , Kingston received the push into the WWE Title Picture through his momentum, which began in January 2019, after much controversy he was finally able to secure the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 after his 13-year career at World Wrestling Entertainment . A feud built against Kevin Owens , who attacked him on a SmackDown issue after Owens apparently joined The New Day. This led to a match for his WWE Championship at Money in the Bank , which Kingston won. On June 7, 2019, he again defended his title against Dolph Ziggler on WWE Super ShowDown. On June 23, 2019 he played another match against Dolph Ziggler, this time in a steel cage match , for the title, which he won again. On July 14, 2019, he defended the title against Samoa Joe . On August 11, 2019, he defended his title with a double countout against Randy Orton at WWE SummerSlam . On September 15, 2019, he again defended the title against Randy Orton at WWE Clash of Champions. On October 4, 2019, he finally lost the title to Brock Lesnar on WWE Friday Night SmackDown after 180 days of reign .
On November 8, 2019, he and Big E won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship for the fourth time . For this they defeated The Revival Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder. On November 24, 2019, he and his tag team partner Big E played a Triple Threat Tag Team Match against The Viking Raiders Erik & Ivar and The Undisputed ERA Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish at the WWE Survivor Series . He lost that match. They lost the title on February 27, 2020 in Riyadh , Saudi Arabia , at WWE Super ShowDown against The Miz and John Morrison . On April 17th, 2020, he and Big E won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship again , defeating The Miz and John Morrison. The reign lasted 93 days and finally lost the title on July 19, 2020 to Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura .
