  • WWF World Tag Team Championship
  • Unified WWE Tag Team Championship

The World Tag Team Championship was the WWE's premier tag team wrestling title and was only awarded to the Tag Team division. As the first WWE Tag Team Championship, the title was introduced on June 3, 1971 and was equivalent to the WWE Tag Team Championship . On April 5, 2009, the championship was combined with the WWE Tag Team Championship and on August 16, 2010, it was discontinued in favor of the WWE Tag Team Championship . As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .

history

The World Tag Team Championship was established on June 3, 1971 as the WWWF World Tag Team Championship . Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler were the first ever WWWF Tag Team title holders.

When the World Wide Wrestling Federation was renamed the World Wrestling Federation in 1979 , all titles of the WWWF were also renamed. The World Tag Team Championship has been called the WWF World Tag Team Championship since the mid-1990s and has been shortened to the WWF Tag Team Championship since the mid-1990s .

In March 2001, the World Wrestling Federation bought the competitive league World Championship Wrestling . In order to reduce the mass of titles now available from WWF and WCW, many titles from WCW were combined with those from WWF. This happened in the so-called "storyline invasion". At the unification match of the Tag Team Championships, the then WCW Tag Team Champions , the Dudley Boyz, defeated the reigning WWF Tag Team Champions , the Hardy Boyz and thus became the last WCW Tag Team Champions .

In 2002 the WWE carried out the so-called roster split a d. H. After the takeover of WCW by the WWE, the wrestlers in both leagues were divided between the two roster Raw and SmackDown .

The championship was renamed World Tag Team Championship and belonged to the Raw squad, which means that SmackDown did not have a tag team title. To remedy this, the WWE Tag Team Championship was introduced for the SmackDown squad .

When John Morrison and The Miz won the title on December 13, 2008, the World Tag Team Championship moved to ECW . On April 5, 2009, the title was combined with the WWE Tag Team Championship , but both titles continued to be awarded.

In the August 16, 2010 Raw episode, the World Tag Team Championship was discontinued in favor of the WWE Tag Team Championship . The WWE Tag Team Championship got a new design and was awarded to both roster of the WWE from then on. The new design was presented by Bret Hart .
