Phillip Jack Brooks (born October 26, 1978 in Chicago , Illinois ), better known by his ring name CM Punk , is a former American wrestler and MMA fighter who is currently a commentator on Cage Fury Fighting Championships and as an analyst at WWE Backstage occurs. He received the highest title in the WWE five times .

His straight-edge - gimmick also represents his own lifestyle. He was so impressed by this lifestyle since childhood that he formed his own band, "Dark Moonside", at the age of 19. This also represents the straight-edge lifestyle.

Wrestling career

Independent Leagues (1999-2005)

Phil Brooks had been fascinated by wrestling since childhood. After seeing Roddy Piper smash a coconut on Jimmy Snuka's head , he was determined to become a wrestler too. Brooks began backyard wrestling in the late 1990s and formed the Chick Magnets team with CM Venom. Brooks made his beginnings in pro-wrestling with various independent promotions (e.g. IWA Mid-South , NWA Mid American Wrestling or International Wrestling Cartel ). At the IWA Mid-South, he denied a feud against Colt Cabana and Chris Hero .

Ring of Honor (2002-2006)

Punk at ROH Wrestling in 2003.

Cabana brought Brooks to Ring of Honor (ROH), where both the Second City Saints twice the Team ROH World Tag Championship won . As part of his newly signed contract with WWE, he was allowed to win the ROH World Championship from Austin Aries on June 18, 2005 at the show Death before Dishonor III . After winning the title, Brooks did gymnastics against the fans, laying the foundation for a storyline that fans and officials would later go down in history as the Summer of Punk . The storyline pretended that he would take the title with him to the WWE and several wrestlers including Christopher Daniels , Jay Lethal , Samoa Joe , Mick Foley , Roderick Strong and James Gibson did everything they could to prevent this. The latter succeeded on June 18, 2005 at Redemption in a Four Corners Elimination Match, where Daniels and Samoa Joe also participated. One day later, Brooks said goodbye to Punk: The Final Chapter with a 2 out 3 Falls match against his longtime friend Colt Cabana from the Ring of Honor and the fans, which ended in a very emotional moment.

Brooks also briefly coached the ROH Wrestling School .

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2003-2004)

Punk made its debut for NWA: Total Nonstop Action Wrestling in 2003 . There was trouble with him when he fought in front of a café near the TNA Asylum in Nashville , Tennessee with Teddy Hart (a nephew of Bret Hart ) after a verbal argument in early 2004 . CM Punk threatened to be fired by TNA officials, whom he avoided by voluntarily withdrawing after TNA had forbidden its wrestlers to compete in the Ring of Honor as a consequence of the Feinstein scandal . Brooks chose the Ring of Honors.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2006-2014)

Ohio Valley Wrestling (2006)

Brooks was first used in the WWE Ohio Valley Wrestling Training League . There he was allowed to win the Southern Tag Team title as well as the OVW Television and the OVW Heavyweight title together with Seth Skyfire.

ECW Champion and World Heavyweight Champion (2006-2009)

On June 24, 2006, Brooks made his debut with the ECW . He then feuded against Mike Knox. A feud with Johnny Nitro followed , in which Brooks was finally allowed to win the ECW title. On January 21, 2008 Brooks had to hand over his title to Chavo Guerrero .

At WrestleMania 24 he finally won the Money in the Bank Ladder Match . On June 23, 2008, Brooks was allowed to switch to the Monday show RAW as part of the WWE Draft . On June 30, 2008 he was allowed to win the World Heavyweight Championship from Edge . On September 7th, Brooks was injured at the major event Unforgiven, according to the storyline , and his title was declared vacant . Brooks then feuded with Kofi Kingston as a partner against Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes , the carriers of the World Tag Team Championship , and was allowed to win the title of these on October 27, 2008. On December 13th they had to give back the titles to John Morrison and The Miz . On January 19, 2009 he received the WWE Intercontinental Title against William Regal , until he had to give it back to JBL on March 9 of that year . At WrestleMania 25 he was again able to win the Money in the Bank Ladder match . Brooks holds the record for fastest WWE Triple Crown win ever. He was allowed to win the three most important titles (the World Heavyweight, the WWE Intercontinental and the World Tag Team Title (with Kofi Kingston)) within 204 days.

It was then moved to the SmackDown fire as part of the draft on April 13, 2009. At the major event Extreme Rules (June 7, 2009) he was allowed to win the World Heavyweight Champion title against Jeff Hardy . At the major event Night of Champions on July 26, 2009, he lost to Jeff Hardy and gave up the title. Brooks was allowed to receive this again at SummerSlam 2009. At the major event Hell in a Cell 2009 he had to surrender his title to the Undertaker .

The Straight Edge Society and leader of The New Nexus (2009-2011)

At the beginning of 2010, Brooks feuded against Rey Mysterio . At the major event Over the Limit on May 24, 2010, he lost a match against him, in which on the one hand his hair and on the other Rey Mysterio's mask were at stake. He then had his hair cut and subsequently founded the sect-like stable " Straight Edge Society " (based on his actual lifestyle), which u. a. Luke Gallows and Serena Deeb belonged to. With the release of Gallows and Deeb, the stable was dissolved.

Since October 2010 Brooks has been part of the RAW roster again. Because of an injury sustained in the match against Evan Bourne , he was part of the RAW commentary team since November 22nd. After the injury break, he began a brief feud with John Cena . On December 27, 2010, Brooks was presented as the leader of the Staples Nexus . He then feuded with Nexus against John Cena and Randy Orton .

The Summer of Punk and WWE Champion (2011-2013)

On July 17, 2011 , Brooks won the WWE Championship from John Cena at the big event Money In The Bank in front of a home crowd in Chicago , where he was frenetically celebrated as the real heel by the fans and Cena was massively booed. Shortly before that, Punk gave a worked shoot promo at RAW on June 27, 2011 in Las Vegas , Nevada, an apparently open and previously unsettled interview segment in which he included Cena, WWE owner Vince McMahon, his daughter Stephanie and others Triple H massively insulted and responded to real events. After he later explained that the microphone in the hand of each other just a microphone in his hand but was a pipe bomb, was this picture later as " Pipebomb " (English. Pipe bomb known). After winning the title, as announced, he left the WWE with the title belt, as his previous contract had expired after Money In The Bank , according to the storyline . In fact, just a few days earlier, Brooks had signed a new, significantly more lucrative contract with WWE.

On July 25, 2011, Brooks returned as Babyface with the WWE Championship back to the WWE after he had interrupted Triple H at a press conference a few days earlier. Since John Cena had meanwhile won the previously vacant WWE Championship in a tournament by Rey Mysterio, WWE COO Triple H announced at SmackDown the next day that there were now two legitimate WWE champions. At SummerSlam , Brooks won the unification match against John Cena, but had to give the title back to Alberto Del Rio on the same evening , who redeemed his Money in the Bank suitcase. On November 20, 2011, Brooks received the title back from Del Rio at the major Survivor Series event . Similar to the Ring of Honor, this storyline was called the Summer of Punk.

WWE Champion CM Punk with Paul Heyman at TLC 2012 .

Feuds followed against Chris Jericho , Daniel Bryan , Kane and John Cena , who redeemed his Money In The Bank contract but failed to defeat Brooks on the anniversary show RAW 1000 . This makes him the first WWE Superstar to successfully fend off a Money In The Bank title shot . From September 3, 2012 to July 14, 2013, Paul Heyman served as Brooks' manager. This was followed by a feud against Ryback . Brooks received a lot of media coverage in the United States when he was involved in a scuffle with a fan on the October 8, 2012 RAW show. Brooks had run into the audience because of a segment, as it is more common at WWE, and waited there for the end of the show segment. He was hit in the back of the head by a fan who was hiding behind another. Phil responded to the attack, turned around and hit the fan standing behind him, who he mistakenly assumed to be the attacker, with a slap in the face. He also broke his glasses. Subsequently, the lack of use of the security was criticized, but also the behavior of the fan, who still bragged about the attack on the Internet. The fan Brooks mistakenly caught has not brought charges against him.

At the Royal Rumble on January 27, 2013, he lost his title after a reign of 434 days at The Rock . Although this was by far the longest reign in 25 years, Brooks was rarely in the main event (the main fight of the evening) during this time. Most of his matches were placed in the middle of the card, while the main event was taken by John Cena, Randy Orton or Triple H. This fact was criticized by many fans, because Brooks was only allowed to "play second fiddle" and thus devalued this historically long reign of the most important title of the WWE.

Last feuds and resignation (2013-2014)

CM Punk with Heyman before his match with Undertaker at WrestleMania 29 .

At WrestleMania 29, CM Punk lost to Undertaker in the evening's match. After Wrestlemania 29, Brooks took a break due to an injury. On June 16, 2013, he ended this break with a match against Chris Jericho at the major event Payback .

After that, Punk feuded with Daniel Bryan against the Wyatt Family and against the group The Shield . His last appearance for the WWE was at the Royal Rumble in January 2014, after which he left the WWE.

On January 26, 2014, Brooks made his last appearance at the 2014 Royal Rumble . The day after the Royal Rumble , when Brooks was present on Raw backstage, he left the arena annoyed and put on a no show at the upcoming SmackDown tapings . He was then suspended for 60 days. After long rumors about his whereabouts in the company, he was fired on June 13, 2014.

On November 26, 2014, Brooks was a guest on Colt Cabana's wrestling podcast "The Art of Wrestling" , where he shared his version of what happened around his departure. He mainly criticized Vince McMahon, Triple H, Ryback, the WWE doctor Dr. Chris Amann and the conditions at WWE. Brooks felt badly treated by the WWE. He stated that all the rumors that led to his departure were true, but did not represent the primary reason for his departure, which was his health. Brooks himself emphasized that WWE was history for him and that he was concentrating on other projects, so u. a. his work as a comic book author for Marvel Comics , his appearances on other podcasts such as Talking Dead, (a panel discussion for the American TV series The Walking Dead ) and his involvement in the MMA field. The podcast made waves in the wrestling community and has been the main topic in all wrestling media for a long time.

Return (since 2019)

Brooks stated time and again over the years that he was no longer interested in actively returning to pro wrestling. On November 12th, however, he had a surprising appearance on the Fox Sports 1 television program WWE Backstage . He then joined the program as a special contributor and analyst. However, Brooks is directly under contract with Fox and not with the WWE.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (2015-2018)

Brooks announced on December 6, 2014 during a live show of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC 181) that they would be competing for UFC from 2015. He played his first fight in the UFC on September 10, 2016 and lost it to Mickey Gall in the first round after 2:14 minutes by giving up.

He also lost his second fight against Mike "The Truth" Jackson on June 9, 2018 at UFC 225 in front of a home crowd in Chicago by unanimous decision. The fight sparked discussions in advance, as many MMA fighters, experts and fans criticized his position in the main card because of his skills and lack of experience. This was only compounded during the fight when Jackson dominated Brooks, but failed to take advantage of his numerous chances to knockout him and show him off. Both came under fire and UFC President Dana White announced after the fight that neither of them have a future at UFC.

Private life

Brooks has two sisters and a brother who goes by the name Mike Broox. His “straight edge” gimmick corresponds to his actual lifestyle. Brooks does not drink alcohol and is abstinent from cigarettes and drugs. Early in his wrestling career, he broke the top of his skull and, because of his straight-edge attitude, refused to be treated with painkillers even there. He wears a Pepsi tattoo on his left upper arm with the reason: "I like Pepsi". On his fingers (thumbs excluded) is written on one: DRUG and on the other FREE, which should further confirm his straight edge setting, since his father is alcoholic.

Brooks already had relationships with several female colleagues. He was already in a relationship with the TNA wrestlers Tracy Brooks & Daffney Unger and the former WWE wrestlers Maria Kanellis, Lita and Beth Phoenix . On June 13, 2014, he married former WWE wrestler AJ Lee . Brooks changed his diet in spring 2012. Contrary to his earlier claim that he was vegan , he made it clear to the Chicago Sports Tribune a short time later that he would still eat fish. So he is a pescetarian who largely dispenses with other animal products.

WWE Doctor Dr. Chris Amann sued Brooks and Colton for $ 1 million based on comments on the podcast for feeling disparaged by Brooks' statements. He was supported by the WWE Legal Department. However, Amann lost in a Chicago court on June 5, 2018. On August 10, 2018, it was announced that Colton would sue Brooks for one million US dollars because Brooks refused to provide the financial aid he had promised to cover his legal fees. The lawsuit was dismissed by the court on December 10, 2018 for lack of evidence, and Colton filed a new lawsuit for $ 1.2 million.

Over the years, he himself made various statements about the meaning of the abbreviation "CM" in Brooks' stage name. The abbreviation for “Chicago Made”, “ Charles Manson ”, “C. Montgomery ( Burns ) "or" Cookie Monster "( Cookie Monster ). In May 2018, however, during the trial of the lawsuit against him and Colton, Brooks testified under oath that the abbreviation would originally stand for "Chick Magnet" ( chick = chick , coll. For woman ). The background was the Chick Magnets Tag Team.
