Ring of Honor Wrestling ( ROH ) is an American wrestling promotion founded by Rob Feinstein in 2002. This doctorate is based in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania .

It is the largest and best-known US independent league, but cannot be compared with World Wrestling Entertainment , the market leader in wrestling. Ring of Honor is very popular with young wrestlers because of its flexible work schedule and is used by many as a career springboard into the big leagues.

Ring of Honor has been part of the Sinclair Broadcast Group since May 21, 2011.

history

target group

In contrast to the wrestling leagues World Wrestling Entertainment and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling , Ring of Honor is geared towards a completely different target group. The WWE is mainly and the TNA partly geared towards fans who see wrestling as a show. ROH is geared towards people who recognize the entertainment behind it. Ring of Honor is primarily aimed at the so-called Smart-Marks, who know that storylines are part of wrestling.

Code of Honor

Code of Honor ( Eddie Edwards and Michael Elgin)

In order to stand out from the WWE and the usual mainstream wrestling, the concept of the code of honor was developed. Initially there were five rules which wrestlers presented as a kind of moral obligation.

  • Shaking hands before and after each match
  • no interference from outside - no interference in matches of others or allow others to interfere in his favor
  • no surprise attacks
  • No harm is done to referees
  • no deliberate disqualification - matches are decided by pin or task

The first three rules in particular were mainly used to make heels more believable. Thus, Christopher Daniels by non-observance of rules on how the denial of shaking hands, marketed as the first major heel. The last two rules characterize the typical ROH match ends: the "honest" pins, tasks and knockout .

At the beginning of 2004, the owner and ROH chief booker Gabe Sapolsky found that this code of honor had become obsolete. The doctorate was already well established and had loyal followers. Therefore, the wrestlers no longer had to obey the code, which allowed more dramatic and exciting match outcomes. Later, the code of honor reappeared in the form of three rules:

  • Shaking hands before and after each match - if the opponent is respected
  • Matches only under fair conditions
  • No harm is done to referees

Women of Honor

The female wrestlers are named in the Ring of Honor Wrestling Women of Honor.

Dojo

Ring of Honor operates its own wrestling school which is called "ROH Pro-Wrestling School" and is based in Bristol , Pennsylvania . The current head coach is Delirious after moving from Washington to Pennsylvania. Past coaches were Bryan Danielson , CM Punk and Austin Aries .

The first three years have now graduated and are working in the American independent sector. Sometimes there are also matches with the participation of former and current students at Ring of Honor shows. The best of a year receives the Top of the Class Trophy , which is defended in a similar way to a title at Ring of Honor shows. The current title holder is Pelle Primeau, although Shane Hagadorn was actually the best of the year.

The Rob Feinstein scandal

Founder and owner Rob Feinstein also had his own video label, RF Videos , which produced videos for various wrestling leagues, among others. a for Extreme Championship Wrestling as well as some shoot interviews with former wrestlers from the major leagues.

In March 2004, some Internet journalists managed to contact Feinstein by posing as unsuspecting children. After being approached by Feinstein about sexual contact, a meeting was arranged. When Feinstein arrived at the agreed meeting point, the journalists, various camera teams and the police were already waiting for him. This scandal shook the whole wrestling business and Ring of Honor was on the verge of financial failure as a result of this scandal. The financial collapse was barely prevented by the officials by urging Rob Feinstein to retire from the wrestling business and leave the Ring of Honor.

But the Feinstein scandal had far-reaching consequences for the league. Total Nonstop Action Wrestling forbade their wrestlers to appear at Ring of Honor with immediate effect. Three TNA actors then terminated their contract and signed up with ROH.

Weekly show

As a rule, Ring of Honor produces 2 shows on 2 to 3 weekends per month. These are broadcast on UK Free TV (the Wrestling Channel ) and are also available on DVD. However, ring-of-honor shows are also broadcast as pay-per-views every 2 months in America . There are also regular shows in the UK and Japan .

At Ring of Honor, wrestlers who are technically well trained are particularly in demand. Well-known examples are Davey Richards or Roderick Strong. ROH tries to offer wrestling fans a technically demanding wrestling program and thus clearly distinguishes itself from the market leader, the WWE .

Ring of Honor announced on January 29, 2009 on their homepage that they had concluded a TV contract with the US broadcaster HDNet, which launched the Ring of Honor Wrestling show . The first episode aired March 21, 2009 and was taped in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . However, the contract was terminated on January 11, 2011, the last tapings for the TV show will take place on January 21 and 22, 2011, of which the last episode will be broadcast on April 4, 2011.

Since September 24, 2011, Ring of Honor can be seen weekly on the television channels of the Sinclair Broadcast Group in the USA. If you register for free on the official ROH website, the current program will also be available to stream after it has been first broadcast on US TV.

Title holder

The following are the reigning ROH World Champion and the current ROH World Tag Team Champions. The FIP World Heavyweight Championship title of the wrestling organization Full Impact Pro has also been defended at Ring of Honor since its inception in 2004. The last time this happened was in October 2008 under the reign of Go Shiozaki. After the end of the business relationship between ROH and FIP in 2009, this will no longer happen. On January 20, 2010, Ring of Honor announced in a press release on its official homepage that the next TV recordings would take place on 5./6. February 2010 a new secondary singles title will be introduced, which will be called the ROH World Television Championship and will be fought out primarily in the weekly TV editions. It was fought in an eight-man tournament. Due to the weather conditions (heavy snowfall) at the beginning of February, the TV recording for February 6, 2010 had to be canceled. The semi and final matches in the tournament were therefore held on March 5, 2010 with new records.
