ROH Pure Wrestling Championship

The ROH Pure Championship was a wrestling title of the US wrestling promotion Ring of Honor (ROH), which existed from 2004 to 2006. Like all wrestling titles, it was awarded as part of a storyline .

particularities

Special rules applied to the ROH Pure Championship:

  1. Each wrestler had three "rope breaks" available, which means the wrestlers could get under the ropes three times to escape a task grip or a pin. Subsequently, this no longer applied.
  2. Slaps in the face were not allowed with the closed fist. The first time there was a warning, every subsequent time a "rope break" was canceled. If these were used up, the wrestler was disqualified.
  3. Counting took place until 20.
  4. The title change could also take place through disqualification and counting.

history

The title was introduced on February 14, 2004 as the ROH Pure Wrestling Championship. It was intended as a second title alongside the ROH World Championship and should be fought out among the wrestlers who are more in the midcard. At the same time, the extraordinary rules should make the matches more exciting.

A one-day tournament with eight wrestlers at the ROH Second Anniversary Show wrestling event crowned the first champion, AJ Styles .

However, AJ Styles did not stay the champion for long. Shortly afterwards, the Rob Feinstein scandal happened , in the course of which the doctorate was in dire straits. Among other things, this broke the contract with Total Nonstop Action , which made it possible for the promotion to have various wrestlers compete in this promotion. AJ Styles, who came from TNA, had to give up his title accordingly. The reign was hushed up for almost ten years, until management changed in 2013. Instead, a new tournament was scheduled in which the ROH Pure Championship should be fought out.

The tournament consisted of two Final Four Corner survival matches and a final, in which Doug Williams emerged as champion.
