Carlo Colonna (born November 17, 1665 in Rome , † July 8, 1739 there ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Carlo Colonna came from the extensive noble family of Colonna and was the third child of Lorenzo Onofrio I Colonna, eighth Duke and Prince of Paliano, and his wife Maria Mancini , a niece of Cardinal Mazarin .

He began his career as an Apostolic Protonotary and was from March 7, 1696 trainee lawyer at the courts of the Apostolic Signature . The next day he was appointed Prefect of the Apostolic Palace .

Pope Clement XI. Carlo Colonna created him in the consistory of May 17, 1706 as cardinal deacon , the red hat and the title deaconry Santa Maria della Scala received Carlo Colonna on June 25, 1706. On May 6, 1715 he opted for the title deaconry Sant'Angelo in Pescheria . Carlo Colonna participated in the 1721 conclave that Pope Innocent XIII. chose. He also took part in the conclave of 1724 , in which Benedict XIII. was elected Pope. Also at the 1730 conclave , which Clemens XII. chose, he was present. On July 24, 1730 he opted for the title diaconia Sant'Agata in Suburra .

Carlo Colonna died in Rome and was buried in the Lateran basilica . Its entrails were buried separately in the Basilica of Santi XII Apostoli .

Act

Carlo Colonna was one of the first patrons of the composer Georg Friedrich Händel .
