The cardinal title of cardinal deacon of Santa Maria della Scala was recreated by Pope Alexander VII in 1664 at the church of the same name to replace the title of cardinal deacon of Santa Maria Nuova , which was repealed in 1661 . Cardinal deacon has been Ernest Cardinal Simoni since November 19, 2016 , who took possession of his titular church on February 11, 2017.

history

With the reinstatement of the title, John Paul II has further increased the number of cardinal titles .

The previous title of cardinal priest was established by Pope Leo X on July 6, 1517, after he had significantly increased the number of cardinals at the consistory of July 1, 1517 . Pope Innocent XI. lifted the title on October 5, 1654 and transferred it to Sant'Agnese fuori le mura .
