Saverio Canale

Saverio Canale (also Xaverio di Canali or Canalabus ; born February 15, 1695 in Terni , † March 20, 1773 in Rome ) was a Catholic Curia cardinal of the 18th century. The cardinals Francesco Canali and Nicola Canali later came from his family .

Life

Saverio Canale comes from a long-established regional aristocratic family who took their name back in the 15th century. ruined castle ( Castello di Canale ) near Amelia (Umbria) . The family lived in Terni as patricians from 1449. His parents were Giovanni Maria Canali, Count of Varolengo, and Caterina Gregori.

At the age of 15, Saverio went to Rome in 1710 to study at Gollegio Ghisleri , a school founded in 1667 for the children of impoverished aristocratic families. From there he wanted to pursue a career in the Papal States. In 1729 he became an employee of Cardinal Francesco Antonio Finy . It was also very close to Cardinal Troiano Acquaviva d'Aragona , Cardinal Protector of the Kingdom of Naples, in whose palace one of the most exclusive clubs in Rome gathered.

In the consistory of September 26, 1766, Pope Clement XIII took. Saverio Canale as cardinal deacon with the titular church Santa Maria della Scala in the college of cardinals. Cardinal Canale took part in the conclave of 1769, in which Pope Clement XIV was elected.
