Francesco Canali
Francesco Canali (born October 14, 1764 in Perugia , Italy , † April 11, 1835 in Rome ) was an Italian Roman Catholic theologian , bishop and cardinal .
Life
Francesco Canali studied in his hometown of Perugia and was ordained a deacon in December 1786 . Two years later he was ordained a priest . In 1793 he became professor of theology at the seminary of Perugia, whose rector he was from 1797 to 1806. In addition, Canali was prior of the theological college in his hometown from 1797 to 1800 and then its treasurer. In 1809 he was captured by the French and taken to Parma, Piacenza, Corsica and Bastia. He only returned to Perugia in August 1814.
Pope Pius VII appointed Canali Bishop of Spoleto on September 26 of the same year . He received the episcopal ordination and was enthroned on November 30, 1814. In 1820 he wrote new constitutions for the seminary of his diocese. In the same year he left Spoleto when he was appointed Bishop of Tivoli . From 1820 to 1822 and 1826 he carried out pastoral visitations.
In 1827 he went to the Curia and became secretary of the Bishops and Religious Congregation and titular archbishop of Larissa in Thessalia . Pope Gregory XVI accepted Canali on September 30, 1831 in pectore to the college of cardinals . The survey was not announced until 1834 and the titular church of San Clemente was assigned to Francesco Canali . The theological college of Perugia celebrated a pontifical office after the announcement .
Cardinal Canali died in 1835 after a short illness and was buried in his titular church.
