Francesco Maria Locatelli (born February 22, 1727 in Cesena , † February 13, 1811 in Spoleto ) was an Italian Roman Catholic clergyman, bishop of Spoleto and cardinal .

Life

Francesco Maria Locatelli came from a family of counts, his surname is also given as Loccatelli . He began his studies in Cesena and continued them at the University of Bologna , which he left on November 9, 1752 with the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque . He was ordained a priest on March 18, 1752 and then became archdeacon of the cathedral chapter of Cesena . During the vacancy of the diocese of Cesena in March 1772, he was elected vicar capitular .

On June 1, 1772, Locatelli was elected Bishop of Spoleto. He was ordained bishop on June 8th of the same year in the Roman church of Sant'Andrea delle Fatte by the Cardinal Secretary of State Lazzaro Opizio Pallavicini ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Francesco Carafa della Spina di Traetto , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars , and Archbishop Francesco Saverio de Zelada , Secretary of the Council Congregation . On June 13, 1772 Locatelli was appointed papal assistant to the throne . In his diocese he had the cathedral restored, founded a lyceum , enlarged the hospital and created a foundation for the poor. He took in the Jesuits expelled from Spain and Portugal as well as French clerics who had to go into exile after the revolution . In 1796 he received Cardinal Gregorio Barnaba Chiaramonti in Spoleto, and welcomed him again in 1805 as Pope Pius VII when he returned from France.

In the consistory of February 23, 1801, Pius VII created Locatelli as cardinal in pectore , this was publicly announced in the consistory of January 17, 1803 and Locatelli was appointed cardinal deacon . He received the cardinal's hat on January 20, 1803, and on March 28 of the same year he received the title church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli , while being elevated to cardinal priesthood .

Francesco Maria Locatelli died in Spoleto after a five-year illness that had affected the body and mind. He was buried in the Cathedral of Spoleto .
