Francesco Carafa della Spina di Traetto (born April 29, 1722 in Naples , † September 20, 1818 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal .

family

He was related to Popes Paul IV and Paul V through his mother . Other cardinals of the family were Filippo Carafa della Serra (cardinal appointed 1378), Oliviero Carafa (1467), Gianvincenzo Carafa (1527), Carlo Carafa (1555), Diomede Carafa (1555); Alfonso Carafa (1557), Antonio Carafa (1568), Decio Carafa (1611), Pier Luigi Carafa (1645), Carlo Carafa della Spina (1664), Fortunato Ilario Carafa della Spina (1686), Marino Carafa di Belvedere (1801) and Domenico Carafa della Spina di Traetto (1844).

Life

On March 22, 1747 he graduated from La Sapienza University with a degree in both rights . In 1745 he joined the Roman Curia . Carafa was ordained deacons on January 13, 1760 and priestly on January 27, 1760 . The next day he was named titular archbishop of Patras . He was ordained bishop on February 16, 1760 by Pope Clement XIII. ; Co- consecrators were Filippo Josiah Caucci , Latin (titular) Patriarch of Constantinople , and Archbishop Giuseppe Locatelli , Apostolic Nuncio in Naples . On March 1, 1760 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in the Republic of Venice . In December 1766 he was appointed secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Clerics .

Pope Clement XIV appointed him cardinal on April 19, 1773 and cardinal priest of San Clemente on April 26, 1773 . He took part in the conclave 1774-1775 , which Pope Pius VI. , and on 1799-1800 , which Pope Pius VII chose. On March 29, 1775 he became Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Clerics. On December 15, 1788, he was appointed cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina . He was sent to Ferrara as a legate . In 1798 he was imprisoned by the French, first in Castel Sant'Angelo and then in Civitavecchia . From 1802 he was cardinal proto-priest . From August 3, 1807 he was cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Damaso .

He died on September 20, 1818 at the age of 96 and was first buried in Santa Maria in Vallicella in Rome. Later his bones were transferred to San Lorenzo in Damaso .
