Marino Carafa di Belvedere (born January 29, 1764 in Naples ; † April 5, 1830 there ) was an Italian cardinal who resigned as cardinal on August 24, 1807 and was later mayor of Naples between 1813 and 1817 .

Life

Marino Carafa di Belvedere came from the Neapolitan noble family Carafa , from which Pope Paul IV as well as numerous cardinals and archbishops emerged. He was Prefect of the Prefecture of the Apostolic Palace between 1795 and 1801 . On February 23, 1801 , Pope Pius VII made Girolamo della Porta cardinal . He was the youngest Italian cardinal until the creation of Pietro Francesco Galleffi on July 11, 1803. At the same time he took over on February 23, 1801 from Romoaldo Braschi-Onesti the office of Cardinal Deacon of San Nicola in Carcere .

He resigned as a cardinal on August 24, 1807, making him the 21st resigned cardinal in church history. The reason for his resignation was the lack of male succession in the noble Carafa family. At the same time he resigned his post as Cardinal Deacon of San Nicola in Carcere, which resulted in a vacancy that lasted until 1816.

On March 30, 1813, Carafa was appointed mayor of Naples by the King of Naples Joachim Murat as successor to Michele Filangieri and held this position until February 17, 1817, after which Michele dei Medici replaced him.
