The conclave 1799/1800 met in Venice from December 1, 1799 to March 14, 1800 . It had become necessary because Pope Pius VI. died on August 29, 1799.

1799, when Pius VI. Having died in exile in Valence , French troops under Napoleon Bonaparte occupied Rome and proclaimed the Roman Republic . Therefore, the conclave could only take place under the military protection of Austria in the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore on the island of the same name in Venice.

Even before the conclave, Cardinal Franziskus announced by Paula Herzan von Harras the exclusive Emperor Franz 'II against the election of Cardinals Carlo Bellisomi and Hyacinthe Sigismond Gerdil . After 103 days of conclave and a 204-day vacancy , Cardinal Luigi Barnaba Chiaramonti was finally elected Pope. He ascended the papal throne as Pius VII .
