Giovanni Andrea Archetti (born September 11, 1731 in Brescia , † November 5, 1805 in Ascoli ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Archetti, the son of wealthy merchants, studied at the La Sapienza University in Rome until 1754 . Pope Benedict XIV appointed him vicar in Bologna in 1756 . Later he became, among other things, consultor of the Holy Congregation for Rites .

After he was ordained a priest on September 10, 1775 , Pope Pius VI appointed him . the next day to the titular archbishop of Chalcedon . A few days later, on September 17, 1775, Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico (Jr.) donated him the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Orazio Mattei and Giuseppe Maria Contesini . The following day, September 18, 1775, the Pope appointed him Nuncio in Poland . During this time he prevented suppressive measures against the order of knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by the Polish royal family and was on a diplomatic mission in Russia in 1783; there he was able to consecrate the first Catholic church in the country on October 18, 1783. Archetti was created cardinal on June 27, 1785, where Pius VI. the titular church of Sant'Eusebio was assigned as a cardinal priest . He took possession of this on the same day. At the same time he was appointed legate a letere in Bologna.

On June 1, 1795 Cardinal Archetti was from Pius VI. appointed Bishop of Ascoli Piceno , from then on he carried the personal title of Archbishop . At the end of March 1798 he was briefly taken prisoner by the French and then could not return to his diocese; instead he stayed in Naples and Gaeta . From December 1799 to March 1800 he took part in the conclave that was held after the death of Pius VI. Barnaba Chiaramonti elected Pope, who then took the name Pius VII . On April 2, 1800, he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Sabina by the new Pope and was confirmed as Bishop of Asoli Piceno. In September 1805, Cardinal returned to Ascoli Piceno after a three-month stay in Brescia . He fell ill shortly after his arrival and died that same year. He was buried in the cathedral of Ascoli Piceno.
