Carlo Rezzonico the Younger (born April 25, 1724 in Venice , † January 26, 1799 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Rezzonico is called the younger, to him from his uncle Pope Clement XIII. to distinguish, who also bore the name Carlo Rezzonico. In 1748 he started his ecclesiastical career as a speaker at the Apostolic Signature . He served as Vice Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church (1758–1763), Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church (1763–1799) and Secretary of the Roman Inquisition (1777–1799).

He was also Bishop of Sabina (1773–1776) and Bishop of Porto-Santa Rufina (1776–1799). As a cardinal chamberlain , he participated in the conclave of 1769 and the conclave of 1774/75 , and during the vacancies he was in charge of the ecclesiastical affairs.

Rezzonico belonged to the Zelanti faction and defended the Society of Jesus against the allegations that eventually led to the abolition of the order. After the occupation of Rome by France, he was allowed to stay as the only cardinal in Rome due to his poor health. He died in Rome at the age of 74 after being bedridden for two years and was buried in the Church of San Marco .
