Life
After studying in Rome, to which he was helped by the support of the Duke of Urbino, he was awarded a doctorate in both rights under Pope Gregory XV. to Commendate Abbot of Santa Maria di Mutino . However, he did not take possession of this office until 1631. At the same time, however, he belonged to the court of Cardinal Antonio Barberini , brother of Urban VIII . Bishop of on September 23, 1630 Gubbio appointed, he received on October 7, 1630 in St. Paul's Chapel of the Quirinal palace by Cardinal Luigi Caetani , with the assistance of the bishops Antonio Ricciulli and Benedetto Landi , the episcopal ordination .
Raised cardinal priest by Urban VIII on November 28, 1633, he was assigned the titular church of Sant'Anastasia on January 9, 1634 . After he was transferred to the episcopal see of Todi on October 11, 1638 , he renounced this diocese before August 31, 1643, took part in the 1644 conclave , where he was also one of the Papabile, and was on January 13 From 1648 to February 1, 1649 chamberlain of the College of Cardinals . In the following years he changed his title churches more often as a cardinal. He received San Pietro in Vincoli on April 21, 1659 , Santa Maria in Trastevere on November 21, 1661 and finally became Cardinal Bishop of Tusculum ( Frascati ) on March 18, 1671 , from where he went to Porto as Cardinal Bishop on January 28, 1675 e Santa Rufina changed. He later also became Sub- Dean of the College of Cardinals . Under Innocent X , as a former supporter of the Barberini, he joined the Medici more closely. He also promoted the Jesuits . Other candidacies in papal elections failed three times: in the conclave of 1655 because of the resistance of the Barberini, in the conclave of 1669–1670 the choice fell on Emilio Altieri because Carpegna had too close ties to the Medici, and in the conclave in 1676 , after the death of Clement X , the hostility prevented France and other European powers over against his relative Gasparo Carpegna his choice despite the support of the Altieri.
