Virginio Orsini (Cardinal)
Virginio Orsini (born May 17, 1615 in Rome , † August 21, 1676 ibid) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Origin and early years
He came from the house of Orsini , which produced a number of cardinals and popes, from the line of the dukes of Bracciano . In his youth he renounced his birthright . He entered the knightly order of St. John in Jerusalem and distinguished himself in the Turkish wars through particular bravery.
Church career
On December 16, 1641, he was Pope . Urban VIII for Cardinal Deacon created and received on February 10, 1642 Title Diakonie of Santa Maria in Portico Octaviae . On November 10, 1642, he moved to the titular diaconia Santa Maria Nuova , and on March 14, 1644 to that of Santa Maria in Cosmedin . At the conclave in 1644 , in which Pope Innocent X was elected, he did not participate. On July 21, 1653 he moved to the titular deaconry Sant'Eustachio . Cardinal Orsini took part in the 1655 conclave that elected Alexander VII Pope. On March 6, 1656 he moved to the titular diaconia Santa Maria in Via Lata and subsequently became cardinal protodiacon . On October 11, 1666 he became a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria degli Angeli . He took part in the conclave in 1667 , through which Clement IX. was elected Pope. On November 14, 1667, Santa Prassede became his titular church, he moved to the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina on January 30, 1668 and became a cardinal protopresbyter . As such, he took part in the conclave 1669-1670 , which Clement X. elected pope, while he stayed away from the conclave between January 24 and 27, 1670 and left it prematurely on February 27, 1670.
On March 18, 1671 he was raised to the rank of cardinal bishop and received the suburbicarian diocese of Albano . His episcopal ordination took place on March 30, 1671 in the Church of Santo Stefano di Bracciano in Rome by Cardinal Giulio Spinola ; Co- consecrators were Federico Baldeschi , titular archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia , and Scipione de Martinis , former bishop of Trebinje and Mrkan . Orsini moved to the suburbicarian seat of Frascati on January 28, 1675 . At the 1676 conclave , Pope Innocent XI. chose, he could no longer participate.
death
During the sedis vacancy , Virginio Orsini died on August 21, 1676 at around 3 a.m. in his palace in Monte Giordano . His remains were transferred to Bracciano and buried there in the Augustinian church of Santa Maria Novella .
