Innocent XI, who was elected Pope by the conclave

After a list of papal candidates had already been drawn up in 1672 , at the time of the conclave only Cardinal Benedetto Odescalchi, who had been elected Pope, was considered papabile .

In the first ballot, on August 3, 1676, Odescalchi received 14 votes. In addition, votes were cast for 13 other cardinals and there were 25 abstentions. In the course of the ballots, the number of candidates fell, but this did not initially benefit Odescalchi. In the 107th ballot on September 20, he received only 8 votes, another 19 votes were split between the cardinals Francesco Barberini , Felice Rospigliosi and Mario Alberizzi , while 30 cardinals abstained. The next day Odescalchi sent by acclamation determined Pope.

With the enthronement of the new pope on October 4, 1676, a sedis vacancy of 75 days ended.
