Conclave 1334

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The conclave of 1334 (December 13-20) elected Jacques Fournier to succeed Pope John XXII. ; he took the Pope's name Benedict XII. on.

Pope election

An early favorite among the papabiles was Cardinal Jean-Raymond de Comminges , Bishop of Porto-Santa Rufina , son of Count Bernard VI. by Comminges and Laura de Montfort. The French cardinals, led by Hélie de Talleyrand-Périgord , naturally did not want to swap their homeland France for the epidemic-ridden and unfriendly city of Rome. And since the Orsini faction wanted to return to Rome, the Colonna faction decided the opposite and joined the French. A sufficient number of cardinals agreed to Talleyrand (two-thirds, or at least 16 of the 24 cardinals present), and thus he could have been elected Pope if he had been willing to swear not to bring the papacy back to Rome - but there was one Arrangement contrary to canon law : the first Ecumenical Council of Lyon had decided in 1245 that "in elections, demands and votes that fall under the electoral law, conditional, alternative and uncertain votes are completely rejected ..."
